   ハード・バップというジャンルが、1954年2月ニューヨークの名門クラブでのライヴで頂点に達したことは紛れもない事実である。高度な技術と知性を誇ったビバップに、ブルース、ファンク、ソウル、ゴスペルといった力強い要素を加えて完成したのがハード・バップであり、その後のジャズ界の主流となっただけでなく、今日に至るまで典型的なジャズの王道として君臨している。

   このライヴでのラインアップはジャズ界における1927年のヤンキースとも言うべき強力な布陣。トランペットのクリフォード・ブラウンはマイルス・デイビスのクールに代わる、ホットなスタイルの象徴だった（バラード「Once in a While」を聴くだけでも入場料を払う価値あり）。ピアノのホレス・シルバーのドライブ感・疾走感あふれるサウンドは、ファンキーなハード・バップ美学の典型。アルト・サックスのルー・ドナルドソンとベースのカーリー・ラッセルはすでに数えきれないくらいの重要な作品に共に参加してきた。ここからハード・バップ史上最も偉大な3バンドが生まれていった。ブレイキーのジャズ・メッセンジャーズ、シルバーのクインテット、クリフォード・ブラウンとマックス・ローチのクインテットである。このアルバムのラインアップは短命に終わったが、その影響力は多大なものであった。バードランドでのこのライヴを全部聴きたい方は、『A Night at Birdland, Volume 2』も聴いてみるのをおすすめする。『Birdland, Volume 1』に匹敵する傑作だ。(Marc Greilsamer, Amazon.com)

For all intents and purposes, the style of jazz known as hard bop came of age at this February 1954 live date from the famous New York club. By adding vibrant elements of blues, funk, soul, and gospel to the technically challenging and highly cerebral bebop form, hard bop became the dominant jazz style and to this day represents what is typically referred to as mainstream jazz. The lineup here resembles the '27 Yankees of the genre: trumpeter Clifford Brown was quickly becoming the red-hot alternative to Miles Davis's cool stylings (his work on the ballad "Once in a While" is worth the price of admission alone); pianist Horace Silver's driving, urgent sound epitomized the funky hard-bop aesthetic; alto Lou Donaldson and bassist Curly Russell had already graced countless essential recordings between them. From this seed grew three of the greatest hard-bop outfits in history: Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Silver's Quintet, and the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. This short-lived ensemble might have them all licked. 最初に手にしたBlue Noteのアルバム。そしてこれを最初に聴いて本当に良かったと今でも思います。

バードランドで演じられたプレイも奇跡的だが、それを記録出来た事も奇跡的。
皆リーダーを張れるほどの名プレーヤー揃いで、夭逝してしまった名トランペッターのクリフォード・ブラウンのプレイも存分に堪能出来ます。（数少ない音源の中でも一番好きです）
ホレス・シルバーも彼がリーダーとなったアルバムは多数あれども此処での彼の方が光っているのでは？
抑える部分、縦横無尽にプレイする部分、５人の絶妙なバランスから演じられる各曲はどれもが素晴らしい。

今までRock,Punk、Bluesばかり聴いていた私もこのアルバムの購入を期にBlue Noteのアルバムを収集する様になりました。
何から聴いていいか迷われている方は、先ずこのアルバムを購入されてはいかがでしょうか。

　クリフォード・ブラウンのトランペット、ルー・ドナルドソンのアルト・サックス、ホレス・シルヴァーのピアノ、カーリー・ラッセルのベース、そしてアート・ブレイキーのドラム。五人のソロが火花を散らし、スリリングな演奏を繰り広げてゆくＣＤ。ジャズの面白さを最近知ったばかりのまだ若葉マークの私ですが、演奏家たちが最初から快速調で飛ばすホットな演奏の醍醐味に、すぐに引き込まれました。
　1954年２月21日、ニューヨークのクラブになるのかな、「バードランド」で行われたライヴ録音（モノラル録音）。冒頭、ピー・ウィー・マーケットの甲高いトーンの司会から、これは面白い演奏が聴けるんじゃないかとワクワクしたのですが、期待を上回る熱くて、スリリングな演奏でした。
　このライヴ演奏を聴くきっかけになったのは、中山康樹『ジャズの名盤入門』（講談社現代新書　2005年刊）のなかで、次のように紹介されていたから。

≪これを聴けば、ジャズを聴く上で理屈や知識や「ワタシ、ジャズを聴いて45年です」といった経験がなんの役にも立たず、ようするにすべては「すごい！」としかいいようのない演奏の前にひれ伏すしかないことがわかる。≫（上記ガイドブック、p.25より）

　この文章が誇張でもなんでもないことは、本ＣＤを聴けば納得されるはず。なんせ、ほやほやのジャズ初心者の私でさえ、「これはワクワクする演奏だなあ」と、思わずリピートして聴いたくらい。ジャズとの距離感を一気に近づけてくれたホットなライヴ演奏に、拍手（パチパチパチパチ）

今から25年前に､学生だった私が初めて買ったジャズのレコードがこれでした。ラジオで聞いた"Quick Silver"にしびれてしまい､レコードプレイヤーも持っていないのに衝動買い…｡
で、これを聞くためにアルバイトをしてレコードプレイヤーを買いました｡
それだけの価値のあるアルバムでしたし、今だに私の大好きなアルバムです｡

その後､本作品の各メンバーがリーダーとなっているアルバムを何枚も買いあさりましたが､熱気と迫力はこのアルバムが随一です｡
