Graham Marsh has done it again! "New York Hot" is the perfect companion to his other jazz album cover book, "California Cool." Both are long out of print but thankfully copies can still be found on Amazon Marketplace.
For "New York Hot", the album covers featured include legendary jazz music labels Prestige, Riverside, and Atlantic records. Blue Note has its own volume, so their album covers can be found in those separate volumes.
The covers are organized by theme. Whether it be women, architecture, painting, font type, or the musicians themselves, the book contains some of the most impressive and influential graphic design ever done. Each two-page spread features four covers grouped together on one side of the page while the other side showcases one album cover in a large, LP-sized image. All album covers are reproduced in full color, many taken from rare LP collections.
Some of the artists' albums included: Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Charles Mingus, Johnny Griffin, Bill Evans, George Russell, and numerous other leading lights of jazz.
Anyone wanting to marvel over brilliant graphic design and get a feel for this most fascinating period of jazz will be thrilled at "New York Hot." It's a shame that it's out of print!
