　ウェザー・リポートはジャケットの雰囲気と音が結構合ってる作品が多い。
この作品は騙し絵風のアートと曲目のミステリアスな感じが実にぴったりで、個人的には一番好きかも。
　ヘビー・ウェザーのように一緒に口ずさむようなメロディがなくて、それが欠点でなくて、何度聞いてもマンネリにならない不思議な魅力になってる。

　なんだかいろいろと不思議な手品を見せられて、突然はいおしまい、っていう感じのアルバム。

1978年ハリウッド、デンヴォンシャイアー・サウンド・スタジオで録音。
ジョー・ザヴィヌル+ウェイン・ショーター+ジャコ・パストゥリアス+ピーター・アースキンというウェザー・リポート最強のメンバーはメンバー変更の激しいこのグループにしてはめずらしく約5年間不動となっている。このアルバムは不動となった彼らの音楽がザヴィヌルがコントロール出来ないくらいに成長しモンスターとなった記念すべきアルバムである。ジャコ・パストゥリアスという不世出のミュージシャンが自由奔放におのれの音楽を表現した最初のアルバムとも言えるだろう。
1.3.5.8がザヴィヌルの曲、2.6がジャコの曲、4.7がショーターの曲だが何といっても6のジャコ作の『Punk Jazz』が凄い。ザヴィヌルもポリフォニック・シンセ全開で頑張っているのだが、あまりにもジャコが凄すぎて霞んでしまう。ジャコのファンは絶対はずせないアルバム。僕は全ウェザーのアルバムでこのアルバムが一番好きだ。

Black Market、Heavy Weatherと大ヒット作が続いていたので、本作が発表されたと聞いたときには「さぞかしノリノリなご機嫌なヤツだろう」などと勝手に想像しながらFMから流れてくる音を聴いて、思わず自分の耳を疑ったことを昨日のように覚えている。このあと、8:30、Night Passageとヒット作が続くわけだが、本作品はいわば前後をヒット作に挟まれた静かなたたずまいといった趣きを見せる。静かなたたずまいではあるが、その雰囲気はまさに冷静そのもの。ともすれば、非常に冷徹な印象さえ受ける。興奮した頭を冷やして心機一転、すすむべき方向を再確認といったところ。WRの本質が納められている。今一つ評価がよくないような気がする（愚生だけ？）が、頭をリセットしてよくよく聴くと非常な問題作であることがわかる。お勧めです。
