When I began reading this poignant biography I was immediately enraptured by the wealth of amusing and enlightening information Hanberry delicately weaves with humor and sentiment. I consider this edition a collector's item due to its elaborately designed dust jacket, layout, and the stunning color photographs of Wilde family memorabilia and reprints of rare family portraits. I was pleased to learn that Oscar's parents, William and Jane (Speranza), led the charmed lives of the intelligentsia and were every bit as remarkable as their internationally renowned son. Jane Wilde, one of the best known female artists of her time, was at the forefront of the feminist movement and her individualism and accomplishments will beguile you. The esteemed William Wilde was leading many other major movements and is an international hero to this day. Of course, their talented son lived an enthralling yet tragic life, and his works and persona live on!
More Lives Than One introduces a sundry of fascinating people of the day, but the three eccentrics whom the biography focuses on, Oscar and his celebrity parents, are most bewitching. Hanberry adeptly paints a lively portrait of life for both the Irish Society and famished of the 1800s. The author reaches back in time and also draws the reader to modern times in order to seamlessly join the people and events in the book. Not only does this thorough biography transport the reader to Ireland and Britain of the 1800s, but it whisks you around the globe to accompany William and Oscar on their journeys to Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, North America, the Mid East, Scandinavia and other captivating locations. I enjoyed looking at the high quality photographs over and over, but what I most appreciate about More Lives Than One is the exposure it gave me to other well-known people and themes spanning several generations. I feel wiser and more worldly after reading this clever, insightful, and alluring bio.
