Perhaps Metallica are to blame. When they decided to tour with an entire symphony orchestra and release the result as an awesome live album (1999's
S&M), little could they know that they would inspire others to follow suit. With
Moment Of Glory, German poodle rockers the Scorpions have done just that. Unfortunately, where Metallica's collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra added new levels of immensity and menace to some of their best tracks, the Scorpion's collaboration with Berliner Philharmoniker only comes out sounding rather tepid. New song "Moment Of Glory" comes across all Disney, especially when the children's choir kicks in, while Zucchero steers the once-proud rockers down the middle of the road when he guests on "Send Me An Angel". Only "Hurricane 2000" (a new version of "Rock Me Like A Hurricane") displays any of its former rocking grandeur. Bassoons don't rock. Neither do flutes, or piccolos. It's obvious to the rest of the world, so why did nobody inform the Scorpions?
