カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルス出身。88 年に自主制作で『Banjo Story』を発表。93 年 にインディーで発表したシングル「Loser」がラジオ局でヘヴィ・ローテーションとなり各レーベル争奪戦の末、ゲフィンとサインする。この年にカセット・アルバム『Golden Feelings』を発表している。 1994 年にゲフィンより再リリースした「Loser」はビルボードのモダン・ロック・チャートで5 週 連続1 位を獲得し、同年に発表したメジャー・デビュー・アルバム『Mellow Gold』はビルボー ド・チャートで13 位を記録。またインディーからは『One Foot in the Grave』、『Stereopathetic Soulmanure』、『Western Harvest Field by Moonlight』と前人未到のペースでアルバムをリリースする。
96 年アルバム『Odelay』をリリース。世界各国で驚異的なセールスを記録し、ダブル・プラチナム・アルバムと音楽賞最高峰のグラミー賞でベスト男性ヴォーカル・パフォーマンス、ベスト・オルタナティヴ・ミュージック・パフォーマンスの2 部門を受賞する。97 年、記念すべき第1 回”フジ・ロック・フェスティヴァル’97”に参加すべく来日を果たすが台風直撃の為、出演がキャンセルとなる。98 年、“フジロック’98”に出演。アルバム『Mutations』をリリース。レディオヘッドを手掛けるNigel Godrichを迎え制作され話題を呼んだ。傑作『Odelay』の続編的内容と言われたアルバム『Midnight Vultures』ではBECK 的ソウルファンクを打ち出し音楽的才能を見せ付けるものとなった。本作はグラミー賞のベスト・アルバム賞にノミネートされる。
2000 年に行われたワールド・ツアーは日本を含む、世界各国で大成功を納めた。2001 年、“サマーソニック’01”にヘッドライナーとして出演。伝説のステージとなる。2002 年には再びプロデューサーにNigel Godrich を迎えフォーク色の強い、アルバム『Sea Change』をリリース。ゴールド・ディスクを獲得する。2005 年3 月、原点回帰アルバム『Guero』を発表。本国アメリカではビルボード2 位を記録しゴールド・ディスクを獲得。“フジロック’05”のヘッドライナーを務める。同年『Guero』のリミックス・アルバム『Guerolito』を発表。2006 年、Nigel Godrich をプロデューサーに迎えアルバム『The Information』をリリース。変幻自在のアートワークとファンキーでグルービーな内容が話題を呼び、全世界でロングセールスを記録。ビルボード7 位。

Modern Guilt is the tenth studio album by musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Beck. Modern Guilt features two contributions by Cat Power and co-produced by Danger Mouse. The hit track 'Chemtrails' is a genre-bending tour de force that showcases Beck and producer Danger Mouse's shared affection for late '60s Psych-Pop. The album releases on July 8, 2008, his 38th birthday.

The new album contains 10 new songs, and with the exception of last year's Grammy-nominated, digital-only single "Timebomb", Modern Guilt is the first new material Beck has written since the prolific stretch that produced 2005's platinum Guero and 2006's universally acclaimed The Information.
Modern Guilt is a tightly assembled group of songs that range in lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off the cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. Musically, the album's ten tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and pop classicism, while consistently manifesting Beck and Danger Mouse's shared interest in psych-rock, folk, electronic minimalism and orchestration.
Beck is about to embark on a tour of the UK and Europe, followed by a number of US headline and festival appearances, culminating in Beck's biggest hometown headline show to date, September 20, 2008 at the Hollywood Bowl.
