ようやくリリースされた初のフルアルバム。
しかし期待が大きかったのもあって、個人的に
かなりガッカリしてしまいました・・・。
なんというか、全体的に薄い。静かに張り詰めた空気や
音の粒の瑞々しさが失われていて、「彼らでなければ
出せない音」とは感じられませんでした。
曲の作りも何となくダラダラ続いていく感じ。バンド
の根幹を担うジョン・スタイナーのドラムでさえ、その
何となくな流れの中に埋もれてしまっている始末。
これはマスタリングにも責任があると思います。
ワープレコードは彼らと合わない気がします。
結局"ATLAS"が一番良い出来でした（"SZ2"などには遠く及ばないが）
あとボーカルは明らかに無いほうがいいです。蛇足。
批判ばかりになってしまいましたが、以前のシングル一枚、
EP二枚に比べると、落ちたと言わざるを得ないです。
ドンキャバの復活作の方が遥かに聴けたなあ。

以前の音源と比べると、幾らかポップになりましたね。
MIXもだいぶ変わったように感じます。
自分は、以前のようなタイトなドラムを聴かせてくれるMIXが好きだったのですが…。

Battlesは、ライブバンドです。
CDをそこそこに聞いたら、是非ライブに行ってみてください。
ホントぶっとびます。踊り狂ってしまいます！
人は選ぶかもしれませんが。
彼らの音源のどれかに共鳴できたなら、楽しめるはずです。

体脂肪率一桁台の、異常に引き締まった音塊が飛ぶ。激ミニマリスティックなリズムの精緻な錯綜。その展開は、非情なまでにストイック。破片的な音の鈍い煌めきと、超人的なリズム/グルーヴを最前面に打ち出し進むそのスタイルは相当に斬新。

しかし同時に、粒子的に飛び交うミクロレベルの鮮烈に反し、そのストイックな構成により、マクロでの爆発を捻じ伏せるように抑え込む形で進行する楽曲は、良くも悪くも並でない緊張を聴き手に強いるようであり、EPレベルでさえ、オールで聴くにはそれなりの忍耐を必要とした。

全ての器楽がパーカッシヴに打ち鳴らされ、精密な狂騒で場を埋めていくTr.1"Race: In"や、祭的なグルーヴを醸成するTr.2"Atlas"、最もライブ的な熱量を感じさせるTr.10"Tij"などは聴いていて物凄く昂奮するのだが、全体として見れば、明確なエクスプロジョンの無い展開がフラストレーションを感じさせるだけという悪い側面が強く浮かび上がり、通して聴くのは非常にツライという、EPでのネガティヴな印象を払拭することは出来なかった。散漫ではないのだが、ひどく部分部分での感触ばかりが際立って響く作品だと感じた。
