１９０５年の出版ということでかなり抵抗がありました。そしてヴィクトリア朝の後のエドワード朝が舞台となっているというのもかなり気になりました。だってエドワード朝のイメージなんて日本人の私には想起できませんから。でもこんな心配は不要です。心配せずに皆さん原語で挑戦してみてください。たしかにこの時代の価値観はそれなりにストリーの展開には反映されています。ヴィクトリア朝時代の堅苦しいconvention（これ自体も神話なのかもしれませんが！）からの脱却とそれへの反乱、「美」という価値観への陶酔、そして宗教への不信の芽生え、下層中産階級との接触と軋轢などが、ここでは重要なモティーフをなしています。しかし、これらの大上段に構えた価値観の闘争は、堅苦しい論文の形を取るのではなく、いつの時代にも見受けられる様々な人間の恋愛の具体的な関係の中でその対立と変貌が描写されることになります。ここでは、二人の狂言回しが登場します。一人は中年独身女性のms.ley、もう一人は彼女のよい話し相手でもある若い医者のfrank hurrellです。この後者は、モームの分身といっても言っていいでしょう。（モームはこの若い医者があこがれる人生をその後送ることになります）この二人は、直接にはこの作品のテーマでもある４つの恋愛騒動には、直接当事者関わることなく、黒子役として、恋愛の当事者の決定と運命にサイドラインからアドヴァイスを与える形で関わることになります。この４つの恋愛は、どれもが当時の価値観に挑戦する異様な組み合わせの恋愛です。ある恋愛はその目的を悲劇的な形で成就しますが、あるものは当然のごとくその成就を妨げられてしまいます。全編、この二人の黒子が呈示する価値観は他のモームの作品でおなじみの英国独特のドライなものですが、最終的には人生賛歌で締めくくられています。この作品の主人公であるms. leyはモームが創造した魅力的な人物ですが、他の作品には登場することはないようです。

“Of Human Bondage”以後の Maugham の英文しか読んだことのない方には、この“The Merry Go Round”の英語はかなり難しく感じられるだろう。特に地の文に関しては、本当にこれがモームの文章？と思う方もいらっしゃるに違いない。後に“Summing Up”のなかで彼が述べる文章の３つの理想、lucidity（明快さ） simplicity（平明さ） euphony（音調の良さ）のうち最初の２つ――特に simplicity――はほとんど見られないからだ。それは、この本が書かれた1905年頃の Maugham が当時の人気作家 Oscar Wilde や Thomas Hardy の影響をまともに受けていた為だと私は思う。古臭い、いわゆる美文調なのである。生前 Maugham はこの作品を「選集」に入れることをハイネマン社に許さなかったそうだが、それはこの小説の内容が気に入らなかったからと言うよりも、この幾分大袈裟な文体を良としなかった為ではなかろうか。それは漱石が『虞美人草』を評価しなかったことに似ている。（私は『虞美人草』は大好きです。）
語彙に関しても、中期以降の作品ではほとんど見られないものがかなり多く使われていて、Maugham は読み慣れたつもりでいた私もかなり苦労した。（彼は“Summing Up”の中で若い頃大英博物館に通って珍しい宝石の名前などを必死で憶えたと告白しているが、“The Merry Go Round”を読んでいるとその姿が浮かんでくる。）従って高校卒業程度の語彙力・読解力しか持ち合わせない人にこの本を原書で読むことは勧められない。（とは言っても Oscar Wilde や Thomas Hardy に比べたらずっと読み易いことは確かです。）
そうした読みにくさにも拘わらず、私はこの作品を多くのモームファンに読んで頂きたい。特に“Of Human Bondage”を愛する方々には是非とも読んで頂きたいと思う。ここには “Of Human Bondage”以後モームが意図的に避けたと思われる「熱いもの」がある。確かに“The Moon and Sixpence”も“Cakes and Ale”も“The Razor’s Edge”も傑作だとは思う。が、こうした作品にはどこか醒めたところがあって、苦笑いは出来ても、登場人物と一緒に涙したり、心から笑ったりすることが出来にくいところがある。あまりに「大人の小説」なのだ。それに対してこの“The Merry Go Round”では、私達は登場人物と一体化できる。一緒に喜び､一緒に悲しむことが出来るのである。
私は、ハイネマン社が Maugham の没後この作品を復活させて呉れたことは大英断だったと思う。きっと社員の中に“Of Human Bondage”と同じくらいこの作品を愛する若者がいて、上司に対して是非復活させましょうと頑張ってくれたに違いない。その青年にはいくら感謝しても感謝し足りない気持だ。

Another great Maugham story

This book again earns Mangham's default 5 star rating. While not as significant as "Razors Edge" or The Moon and Sixpence", it is far better then "Catalina" or "Up the Villa." In this period piece set in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century Maugham iterates and conceives story elements from "Cakes and Ale," "Sanitarium" and Lisa of Lambeth" in telling the story of an incestuous cabal of Bourgeoisie English; exposing their spiritual hypocrisy, internecine conflicts, and narrow minded classicism.
The numerous characters involved and developed is more reminiscent of Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" or then the authors previous works with the exception of "Cakes and Ale." However Maugham never gets overly involved with the irrelevant details, rather as master of mood he sets each character up in the first half of the book for a harsh realization of reality in the second half of the book (ala the Merry Go Round). This book demonstrates plausibly the vicissitudes of life. Readers with concrete notions of the way things should be may find this book reflective and/or disturbing. The virtuous sin, the dogmatic get a reality check, and the mighty fall. Classic Maugham. This book is delightful in its revelation of the scope and ambit of frail human beliefs and values.
If you like Maugham books you will like the Merry-Go-Round. There is nothing new here for the Muagham reader as far as themes and characters but it is another wonderful read and another telling statement on the human condition.
