This is a comprehensive review book for medical micro. It's probably the thickest review book out there but it also has a big immunology section at the end. It's written somewhat more like a text than a review book and it probably fits somewhere in the middle. Due to it's length it does take some guts to use as a review source for the shelf, but if you can get through it it's probably the best source out there. I did not do any practice questions or use any other sources and I scored >99th percentile by reading this book alone. I had read most of it once already during the course, so I was able to get through it a few times as a review book. I also had several days to study. The chapters on basic bacteriology and general things like drugs and host defenses were particularly useful and aren't covered by some other review sources. The molecular biology behind the various bacteria and viruses, particularly the way toxins work, is extremely high yield for the shelf and is covered in depth in this book. There's even a separate chapter that explains and organizes the mechanisms behind all the major toxins. The parasite chapters also turned out to be valuable. Lastly, many of the major buzzwords or high yield concepts are bolded and turned out to be really accurate. I was more than happy with this book alone but sometimes it helps to see condensed information, charts, and menmonics - and for this you might want to supplement with a more concise course like First Aid or Microcards. I did refer to my Microcards a couple times before the shelf.

Detailed information and clear column summary. A great book for beginner because of its easy reading and guidance. It also gives you some clinical review question which may help you reorganize and put all of the information into your clinical practice.

Fantastic review of micro and immunology

This is one of the few books I feel compelled to write a review about -- it is incredibly well-written with a narrative that aids in both understanding of the material and memorization of it for the boards. The writing is clear, accessible, and concise -- although there certainly is a bit of repetition of important concepts (which I personally find very helpful). One interesting aspect of this text is its linkage of boards material with current understanding of microbes and other current events. Discussion of recent outbreaks/epidemics, for example, made reading this text much more lively and explanations of difficult concepts are elucidated incredibly well. Hundreds of step 1-type questions follow at the end (multiple choice), as well as about 40 or so cases using buzz-words that are essential for boards (e.g. currant jelly, flask-like lesion, a rose-gardener with subcutaneous lesions, etc.). A fantastic book, highly recommended.
