パーティでごった返すフロアを空っぽにしたいなら、ビーチ・ボーイズのなかでも、とくにひどいアルバムをかけることをおすすめしたい。そして、ウン十年たった今も、1978年の「M.I.U」は、その輝きを失ってはいない。ヴォーカルのマイク・ラブは「ラブ・ユー」の成功と独自性に驚き、南カリフォルニアから、まだ知名度がひくいアイオワはフェアフィールドのマハリシ国際大学のスタジオで新しいアルバムを収録した。おなじみの感傷的な曲の数、ポップな感性を使った実体のない軽い音楽はまるで、ラブがバニー・マニロウをリンバウンドに変えてしまったような感じだ。1979年の「L.A.(ライト・アルバム)」に合わせて長い不在から戻ったブルース・ジョンソンは皆のためにもう一回やってみようとことになった。このバンドでひとつ正しいことがあるとすれば、このアルバムが脂肪分ゼロのスープみたいに軽いアルバムだということだろうか。なんせ、「レイディ・リンダ」では、はずかしげもなくバッハをパクり、アル・ジャーディンの「スマハマ」で、日本の猿真似をして、ワイルド・ハニーの「今夜も最高」のリミックスでディスコサウンドにも寄りかかっている。彼らに今必要なのは悪魔が取引と引き換えに奪っていった魂と売れる曲なのだ。「グッド・タイミン」はこのアルバムのハイライトであり、同時にまあまあヒットした曲だが、ブライアン・ウィルソンのクリエイティブ面での影響が全く見られない。これらの2枚だけで判断したら、彼は怒り狂うかもしれないけれど。ともかく、これら過去の2枚が新しく1枚のCDにまとめられたのだ。(ジェリー・マッカリー, Amazon.com)

Pet Sounds cannot be easy. Neither of these albums, originally released, respectively, in 1978 and 1979, are masterpieces of that order--very few records by anyone, ever, can be considered such--but a couple of decades on, they both make a surprisingly strong case for themselves. The
M.I.U. Album is named for the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa, to which the band had largely relocated by this point (it was the 1970s--people did things like that). Happily, the album contains none of the tambourines, sitars and risible hippy twittering that infested similarly inspired records by George Harrison, for example. Instead, this is the Beach Boys' familiar orchestral pop buffed to a high sheen, and there is nothing at all wrong with tracks such as "Kona Coast" and "Sweet Sunday".
L.A. is a slightly less satisfying retread of the same idea, but contains one bolt of unarguable genius in Al Jardine's "Lady Lynda", and one treasurable curiosity in the 11-minute disco rewrite of "Here Comes The Night", a modest song exhumed from 1967's
Wild Honey and dressed up like an Earth Wind & Fire single in a misguided but nonetheless effective attempt to be fashionable. --
