The colourful and diverse unit badges worn by most Luftwaffe aircraft in WWII are of abiding interest to aviation enthusiasts, heraldic artists and modellers. You have to go back a long time (e.g. to out-of-print Aircam and Kookaburra publications) to find much attempt to catalogue badges and none of those offerings came anywhere near this 96-page, high quality paperback book. For anyone interested in the Luftwaffe, this is a must. It has three components parts
1) Most importantly, a full colour section depicting some 860 individual unit badges. All but a tiny handful have been attributed to known squadrons. Potential purchasers should note that this is NOT an attempt to portray individual pilots' personal markings - just the unit badges.
2) Text which briefly details each of these units, gives information on the origin of the badge (where this is known) and states the aircraft types flown.
3) A section of about 160 black and white photographs. These have been chosen to display the unit badges to best effect and this means that the photos are mostly well known already. This is not exactly a criticism, but if you already have even a modest Luftwaffe library you will experience some deja vu.
Overall, this is an excellent book. You also get slightly more for your money than the title suggests, since the authors have quite clearly included some unit badges being worn during the mid-1930s. This publication is typical of the high quality books on unusual subjects being marketed by the publishers Hikoki. Highly recommended !

There have been many attempts in the past to catalog all known unit badges adorned on most Luftwaffe aircraft in WWII; this book comes closest at accomplishing this monumental task. The book does not attempt to involve itself with personal pilot's marking, though I did find one for one of the more famous pilots on my first read through of the book.
There are 900+ individual unit badges shown in color. The text is extremely terse, detailing the unite badge and period when it was used as well as information on the origin when it is known. Along with this information, some B&W photos have been chosen to show how some badges appeared.
The book is neatly broken in to sections: Fighter units, Zerstörer unit, Bomber unit...etc, which makes it convenient for looking up a particular type of unit.
This book will be of interest to aviation enthusiasts, WWII artists and modelers. If you are interested in a specific unite of the Luftwaffe then there are better books available. The modeler who is interested in presenting something new might find these colorful and diverse unit badges in this book interesting for producing some unit badges.
Is it worth purchasing? YES!
