「Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry 1891-1922」という副題がこの二枚組の内容を過不足なく要約しているように思います。２００５年に発売され、その年のグラミー賞のなにかを受賞したという記事を先月号の「レコード・コレクターズ」で読んで、しばらく聞いてなかったこのＣＤを聞き直しました。音質さえ自分のなかでクリアできれば、どの曲も音楽として楽しめるように思います。門外漢の自分には音源の歴史的価値や意義を云々する知識はありませんが、「初のレコーディング・アーティストのスター」とライナーで紹介されるジョージ・ワシントンの「ザ・ラッフィング・ソング」なる一曲は、理屈抜きにこちらを和ませてくれる明るさのなかに、なにかしら確かなヴァイタリティがあります。また、マイルス・デイヴィスのサントラで有名なジャック・ジョンソンの歌声なども聞くことができ、そのほかにも丁寧な作りのブックレットを片手にエピソードなんかを読みながら聞き進めれば、遠いいにしえの音楽などと切り捨てられない、こちらを楽しませてくれる楽曲満載です。
