ピート・ロックはヒップホップ界では多くの人にこのジャンルでも有数の音楽的な貢献者だと考えられている。インディーズでイギリスを拠点とするレーベルBBE(ベアリー・ブレーキング・イーヴン)から2001年に『Petestrumentals』をリリースしたことはむしろ、アメリカでもまだ強固なピートのファン層がいる事実を照らし出すことになった。BBEとラップスターはここで高らかにピートの(アメリカ)未発表だった作品2枚を紹介する。エレクトラ・レコードを離れる過程で、ピート・ロックは自身のレーベルを立ちあげた。ソウル・ブラザー・レコードだ。時は1994年。このレーベルと最初に契約を交わしたグループがディスク1のINIだ。このグループについてはほとんど知られておらず、すぐに解散している。ディスク2のデダについてはそれ以上に知られていないが、どちらのアルバムもビートの魔術師、ピート・ロック印がしっかりと刻まれている。

hiphop黄金期の中でも特に高い評価を得てきて一世を風靡してきたpeteですが、今作はpeteのソロデビューアルバムソウルサバイバーの今風な音に比べ、黄金期の彼の音に近いです。当時の彼らのアルバムを評価した方なら好きなアルバムだと思います。peteの実の弟であるINIとのラップもなかなかですし、Life`s a bitchをサンプリングした面白いトラックなども収録されております。全体的に見てみても上品で素晴らしいアルバムです。

良質レーベルBBEとRapsterによる共同プロジェクト"Lost And Found"シリーズの第1弾である本作は、巨匠Pete Rockが残した未発表音源の2枚組み（IniとDedaのアルバム）である。

"Soul Survivor"や"NY's Finest"といった最近のPete氏の路線はメインストリーム寄りであまり好みではないが、本作はBBEがらのリリースということもあって傑作『Petestrumentals』を彷彿とさせる素晴らしい出来である。

1枚目のIni作品は"Fakin Jax"が唯一シングルリリースされただけで他はブートで出回る程のまさにアンダーグラウンド音源。#13"Grown Man Sport"は必聴。2枚目のDeda作品に関しては全く知らなかったが、これもまた素晴らしい出来。跳ねたビートと太くドリブルするベースライン、暖かいサンプリング・ループが生むこの高揚感ときたらもはや脱帽。個人的にはこの路線でまたアルバムを出してほしい。

C.L.Smoothとのコンビを経て作られた作品を合わせた２枚組ですが、
何故これがお蔵入りになっていたのか全くわからぬほどの素晴らしい出来です。

InIとのタッグで作られた作品は（ピートの弟さんらしいですね）
C.L.Smoothとのワークを更に発展させたものになっていて、全体的に
メロウな仕上がりになっています。特に１曲目から６曲目までの流れはこの２枚組
の中でも最も感動的で、一つのループでこれ程までの深みを生み出す
ピートの手腕には脱帽してしまいます。
Dedaとのタッグで作られた作品はアップテンポでスウィングしたビート
の曲が多く、ウッドベースやホーンセクションを前に出したよりジャジー
なものになっています。勿論単なるパーティチューンではなく、聴き手を
アゲつつもうっとりさせてしまう様な、ほんとたまらない作りこみ具合です。

それぞれ好対照の印象を持った２枚ですし、ビートもそれ以前のものより
重量感があり現代のヒップホップに通じているのでピート・ロックに
興味を持った方はこの作品から入ってみるのもいいと思います。
