とにかくすばらしい挿絵です。 是非「中身を見る」をクリックしてみてください。 2台の列車（1台は本物、もう1台はおもちゃ）が西をめざして走ります。 全ページで、左ページの「本物」と右ページの家の中を進む「おもちゃ」の絵が、微妙に関連しています。 読者は左右の絵を交互に見ていろいろな発見ができます。3歳の娘も楽しんでいましたが、大人の私も楽しめました。 図書館で借りたのですが、購入しようと思っています。 逸品です。
作者についても一言。
"Goodnight Moon"、"The Runaway Bunny"で知られるマーガレット W．ブラウンさんの1947年の作に、2001年にDillon夫妻が挿絵を新たに描いて発行されたのがこの本です。 文の作者もすごいが、この挿絵画家もすごい。 卓越した挿絵に与えられる「コルデコット賞」を2度も受賞しているつわものです。
後世に残る絵本だと思っています。

雪がしんしんと降る情景があるせいでしょうか、
静寂、という言葉がしっくりくる絵本です。
同時に太くて深い声のナレーションが心地よく聞こえてくるようです。
現在５歳の長男が３歳の頃に大好きだった絵本で、
今は２歳になったばかりの次男のお気に入りです。
二人とも蒸気機関車が大好き、しかもおもちゃの蒸気機関車が
絵本に描かれているので自分も同じように自分のおもちゃで
遊べるところが楽しいようです。
また、新幹線も好きな次男は絵本の中の”本物”の汽車を
新幹線だと言ってこれも楽しんでいます。
