I was around 10 when I did encouter this book which was highly recommended by a librarian at the local library. The Narnia series, including this book were full of excitement, amazement and joys enough to make a girl, fantasy-novel lover, make sleepless every night. It was a kind of shock when I at last had a chance to see "turkish delight" and tasted it 15 years after. Even after I've grown up, I still sometimes go to the library and visit children's books corner to find this book, though this book is really worth reading for grown-ups, too. Some people might say you should start reading Narnia series by chronological order, but I personally recommend to choose this book first to read, for the Pevensie, very important characters of the series don't show up in the Book1, "Magician's Nephew". I think I was so lucky to have read this book when I was a child.
