１９６９年の初めにこのアルバムが出たことから、ＬＺの伝説が始まった。ヤードバーズがゴタゴタ続きで解散して、その時の残党の一人のジミー・ペイジが新しいバンドを作るらしいという記事を読んでから結構すぐにリリースされた記憶があります。それまでの活動からやりたかったことが凝縮されたアルバムだと思った（実はまだまだホンの序章だったのでありますが）。基本的にはブルースをベースにしたハードっぽい音というのでしょうか？ロバート・プラントのそれまで聞いたことのなかったシャウト・ボーカルと重厚なベースラインとドラムの音が重なりそこにジミーペイジのギターが絡むという、それまで聴いたことのなかった世界でした。この後、同じ年の暮に出た２枚目でまたまたぶっ飛ぶのですが、３０年以上経った今ではこのファーストの出来は、２枚目、４枚目にも劣らない傑作だと思うことが多いです。時間と空間が入り混じるという表現を当時のレビューで読んだ記憶がありますが、この訳の分からん表現が当っているような世界を堪能してください。

僅か30時間で録音したとは思えない、轟音へヴィ・ロック・アルバムの記念すべき誕生アルバム。ペイジの素晴らしいブルースの解釈で、完璧に計算し尽くされたサウンド、つくりは特筆に値する。特に；コンパクトにしてキャッチーな“グッド・タイムス・バッド・タイムス”に“コミュニケイション・ブレイクダウン”、実験的にして豪快な“幻惑されて”と、既にゼップの二面性が成立している点は、ちょっと怖気づいてしまう。やっぱりゼップははじめから特別な存在だったんだ、と思わせてしまう、そんな出来過ぎデビュー・アルバム。

ファースト・アルバムとしては、かなりの完成度の高いアルバムです。
この４人の出現により新たなハードロックが生まれたと言っても過言でありません。

ボーカル、ベース、ギター、ドラムそれぞれの個性を出しながらも非常に纏まった音楽になっています。ペイジのギターは特に
Black mountain sideのアコギはいいと思います。
彼がプレイするアコースティック・ギターの音色は良いものがあります。

また、アルバムごとにギターの音質が違うのが彼の特長です。
