Video Description
This witty comedy anticipated such films as
Local Hero and
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill... and marked an early screen appearance by Richard Burton (
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,
Becket). Here he is the "local hero" who leads a rebellion by an English coastal community against meddlesome government bureaucrats who threaten an ancient native custom--illicit smuggling. The redoubtable Roger Livesey (
I Know Where I'm Going) plays a ship's captain who is extremely fond of his own cargo--illegal brandy. Reporter Honor Blackman (
Goldfinger) uncovers the plot, but falls in love with Burton, as events spiral toward a hilarious conclusion.
