This had to happen. In fact, it's amazing that this piece of club-cultural heritage hasn't been released before now. For those with absolutely no clue, The Paradise Garage is credited as being where it all started--"it" being dance culture as we know it. This impressively packaged box-set aims to educate, providing both visuals and extracts from the autobiography of Mel Cheren (the Garage's promoter) to browse while you sample a live set, recorded in 1979, from the club's legendary resident Larry Levan. Don't expect anything too thumping. This is a true-to-the-bone aural account of the last days of disco--all the tracks featured were recorded between 1975 and 1979--but don't count on back-to-back Carwash classics either. Damon Harris' "It's Music" is more familiar as the Crispin J. Glover cover, but exactly the timeless thread that inspired this bootleg runs through all the records here. You can almost feel the energy of change that marked the Garage as seminal to the advancement of club culture--whistles and bongos scat over classic disco strings while the impending electro of the 1980s is never but a paring-down away. An essential purchase for anybody with their eyes, ears, body and soul immersed in what brought the dance scene we both love and loath to fruition. --Ruby Shepheard

A double-CD of 1.5 hour live set by DJ Larry Levan remastered from reel-to-reel tapes recorded live in his Paradise Garage DJ booth in 1979. Also on limited boxed, unmixed 3XLP available at better DJ/dance specialty shops. This project is released in conjunction with the highly respected UK label, Strut Records.
