ジャズファンにも考えながら聴くのが好きな人もいれば、音の心地よさを楽しみたいだけという人もいると思うんですが、僕は後者の快楽主義者です。

その立場で言うと、どんな名盤もこちらの気分にフィットしないと楽しくない。エヴァンスの音は、美しすぎたり冷たすぎたりする一面もあるし、キャノンボールの音は能天気すぎたり丸すぎる一面がある。その音楽の素晴らしさに比べると意外と聴く機会が少ない。

その二人が競演して足りないところを補い合い、それぞれの良さを上手に引き立て合っている。エヴァンスが脇役に回っていて、アルバム全体としては陽気な印象。しかしエヴァンスの氷のようなピアノがキャノンボールの熱を切り裂いて全体を引き締める仕事をしていて、美しくも温かく、陽気だけれど知的な音楽に仕上がっていると思います。

エヴァンスもキャノンボールもほかに有名な名盤があるわけですが、ぶっちゃけ僕が一番多く聴いているのはこのアルバム。特に一曲目、Waltz for Debby が最高。エヴァンスのピアノで始まり、しばらくしてキャノンボールの陽気なサックスが登場するともう少々人目があっても体がリズムを刻んでしまいます。

1960年、すでにヘロインの誘惑に侵されていたエバンスは、注射針の衛生面などから肝臓炎にかかってしまい、トリオ活動の休止を余儀なくされた。しばらく療養している間にスコット・ラファロがオーネット・コールマンのバンドに参加してしまったため、他のミュージシャンのサイドマンとして活動を再開する。カイ・ウィンディングとの共演などがこれにあたるが、このキャノンボール・アダレイとのコラボレーションも同時期のものとなる。録音は1月、2月、3月の3回にわたって行われた。

Waltz for Debbyは有名すぎるほどエバンスの代表作、強いてはジャズピアノ全体の中でも名曲であるが、ここではイントロで１コーラス終えるとアルト・サックスがメロディを吹く。キャノンボール・アダレイは後にアフロジャズを中心としたファンキーなサウンドを展開していくサックス奏者だが、このアルバムとマイルス・デイビスと共演したSomethin' Elseでは美しく歌い上げるアルトを聴かせる。
タイトルトラックとなったKnow What I Mean?はエバンスの曲。

リズムセクションのパーシー・ヒースとコニー・ケイはモダン・ジャズ・カルテットでおなじみのメンバーである。

私はjazzを聞くようになって半年のまだまだヒヨッコです。

先日、とあるjazz喫茶で以前Bill Evansの「Walts for Debby」を私がリクエストしたことをマスターが覚えてくれていたようで、ちょっとしたjazz談義の後にかけてくれたレコードがこれでした。
「jazzっていうのは、同じ曲でもプレーヤーが違うと随分違うんだ。それを楽しむものだよ」といいつつ。

背筋がゾクッとしました。感動しました。目が潤みました。
