Ranulph Fiennes has traveled to the most dangerous and inaccessible places on earth. In the process he lost nearly half his fingers to frostbite, nearly died on several occasions, and raised millions for charity. He discovered the lost city of Ubar in Oman, was the first man to reach both poles by surface travel, and was also the first to cross the Antarctic continent unsupported. In 1993, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him the Order of the British Empire for “human endeavor and charitable services.” An elite soldier, athlete, mountaineer, and renowned explorer, Fiennes is also the author of nineteen books of both fiction and nonfiction.

I found this book particularly interesting because I had read about the time period and activities which involved the British Special Air Service (SAS). The background of the book was a mixture of SAS operations and Muslim culture, which is currently in the news almost daily. The book is a novel, but investigation of the author, Ranulph Fiennes, will cause one to ponder that the story is more truth than fiction.

Ordered this book for my husband after seeing the movie. He really liked this book because it told the "real" story of the Feathermen. He said it was better than the movie. Book was in good condition for a used book.

Well written story that the movie won't be able to match

I am biased because Rannulph Fiennes as an explorer holds my admiration. As an author he is pretty good, interweaving fact and fiction into a story that those not intimately familiar with the details would find indistinguishable. The character development of the antagonists was a bit deeper than that of the protagonists, but that can be forgiven given that there are more of the latter than the former. Fans of espionage novels will find more in common with LeCarre's style of subdued hero than Morrell's aggressive hero. A very British novel in all regards. Highly recommended.
