Good Book, But It Has One Flaw...

First of all let me say that this book does a good job of explaining the concepts of Java. The author explains things in an easy to understand way. The tone is very casual and it feels like you are being taught by a friend, as opposed to say a professor. If you are someone who learns by reading, then this book is good for you.
However, if you are someone who learns by doing, then this book is probably not for you. This is my only problem with the book; it doesn't have exercises or problems to complete. There are a few programs where you can kinda follow along, but I wish the author would have included assignments (with answers and help) at the end of every chapter to actually learn what we read. Without this, the book is essentially a lecture. Because of this, I realized that this book was not for me, and I returned it for something else.
Everyone has different learning styles, so if you don't mind the lack of exercises, then this is a good, easy to understand book for beginners.

Don't waste your time if you're too dumb for dummies

Usually the Dummies series is very good and the authors tend to dumb things down for me to understand. I have used all of the math dummies books to (decently) pass my math classes in college, I can't apply the concepts learned from the book into code for my assignments... perhaps because I am too dumb for this subject in general. If you are struggling alot in a computer science class of some sort, I wouldn't recommend this book. However, if you get stuck on a few concepts once in a while, I would highly recommend this book for you. The author clearly explains how everything works, but there aren't very many examples of actual code for you to see actually how things work (in your own java editor).

Great For Almost Any Programming Level

This book provides an extensive set of principles for coding JAVA programs. If you have some experience with coding in another language (C#, C++, etc.), you will likely be able to learn some of the commands and functions more quickly than if you were a beginner, but the book is simplified with some walkthroughs and examples for beginners. Beginners should be able to pick up on some of the coding patterns (when to use certain statements and commands) after working with some of the examples. I like that this book is not a bunch long code listings with little explanation, which would be very intimidating if you don't program daily or for a career.
