i was very much disappointed with the book, the data and information enclosed is in English only, so you are not really able to learn what you need to say or ask for if you were to deal with immigration on your own, furthermore, only the most basic and obvious information is included.
there is nothing in this book that you could not learn from making a phone call or two.
what would be useful is some details and examples of how to fill out the forms in such a way that immigration would be more inclined to give you a visa. or hints as to what might be useful as enclosures etc.
don't waste your money, call immigration or make a short visit to them if you are in japan, they have consultation if many languages, if you are not in japan, check with the japanese embassy nearest you.
If you are in Japan or you have a plan to come to japan either for fun or on business or for job, you are sure to face lots of problems. Actually Japanese law including Visa is not so difficult, but the most thing is language comprehension. The book avalible on this field is limited, the lawyer don't speak good english, the immigration staff are completely UFO to you. (even they call you alien) So for a foreigner it is like being on another universe.
It is worth to study this book, it gide you from fun to become a permanent resident.

Understanding Japanese visas

For the first time, someone has reduced the difficult-to-understand Japanese visa system into a rational analysis. The book covers the thinking behind the Japanese immigration system then goes into an excellent nuts-and-bolts definition of each visa type and how to use it.
My only complaint about the book is that in an effort to provide legitimate information, the author has skipped useful information about the strategies of applying for a particular visa when you are a borderline case, and also the mechanics/practicalities of getting a new Japanese landing permit by travelling to Seoul or Hong Kong instead of going all the way home.
But overall, this book is essential if you're planning to move to and live in Japan.
