本の絵はキレイなので見ている分には良いです。ただ子供に聞かせたい肝心のCDが良くありません。
まず演奏は安つけたのでしょうか、最低限の音で安っぽい。そしてシンガー。一人で日本語、英語を
うたっているのですが、よく聞かないと何を言っているかわからない。日本語の発音もあやしい部分があり、
かといって英語もいまいち不明瞭。どちらも最初聴いたとき、中国語かと思いました。
子供の発音に影響しそうなので聴かせていません。とにかく素人が収録したかのような低レベル。
買ったことを後悔しています。

I haven't listened to the CD yet, but am very disappointed with the quality of the book.
Does Tuttle not have any proofreaders on staff?
The illustrator has not done her homework.
This book perpetuates stereotypes about Japanese clothing and hair styles.
The illustration on the inside front flap of the paper cover (also shown on page 9) is WRONG!
The adult seems to be wearing a black kagamimochi or Hallowe'en costume wig on her head.
WIth CHOPSTICKS stuck through it!
And a two-color outfit that is definitely NOT a kimono (light pink collar, light pink skirt, deep pink top).
Kimono do NOT have cuffs as shown on the child and adult. The child's kimono is missing a collar (eri) seam.
On pp. 24-5, the seagulls are described in Japanese and English as wearing white shirts and being "white from head to toe," but the illustrator shows a black tail on one, and grey wings on all of them.
P. 20 has a spelling error ("sandles").
The Pronunciation Guide at the front of the book says that "u" always "sounds like it does in the word "blue". In that case, "Zouri" on p.20 should be sounded "zo-u-ri"? Wrong!
Although Wikipedia describes hachimaki as a type of bandanna, "headband" is more accurate. (p.29)
Japanese-English dictionaries such as Sanseido's translate "biwa" (p.33) as "loquat" or "medlar" - NOT "plum".
Receives one star for providing romaji and reasonably accurate translations.

Great book, lovely illustrations

What a great book. The illustrations are refreshing, in a vibrant and engaging style, very colourful and punchy. My child loved the story & learned some Japanese too. The CD is a good fit with this package, doesn't seem superfluous at all.

I'm just starting to learn more about Japanese culture and someone recently passed this book along to me and I must say I've enjoyed it quite a bit. While I'm not sure if it's the most perfect representation of the linguistics, I think it's a beautiful book with a lot going for it.
For one, the CD is great. I'm usually weary about books that come with separate media as it usually feels thrown together to justify a price tag. Definitely not the case with this one.
Another thing about this book is it's illustrations which are lovely. I can't imagine kids or adults (like myself) not enjoying the artwork and they really make the experience of learning a new culture a pleasant one.
Last but certainly not least, some of the rhymes have notes added to them which really puts things in a cultural context which is great for someone like myself who is fascinated by what a country's poetry, songs, art, and folklore say about it's culture.
All in all, I enjoyed this book quite a lot and think it's a really nice intro to language and culture.

What a delightful little book. My children love listening to the CD whilst browsing through the book looking at the beautiful bright illustrations. It has become a favourite in our home!
