内容説明

A Jamaican's Journey to Time and Patience is Derrick Garland Coy's portrait of his multiethnic family whose African, Chinese, and European roots merge in Jamaica during the 1800s, then scatter across the globe in the mid 1900s, sending him on an odyssey to discover and fulfill God's call in his life, heal family wounds, and share Christ's message of redeeming grace and love. Against the historical background of 470 years of Spanish and British colonial rule over Jamaica and the island's journey to independence, Derrick weaves stories of the various lives of his forebears and tells his own life story: born to a briefly married thirteen-year-old mother and nineteen-year-old father, her struggles as a teenage single mother, her love affairs with British soldiers stationed in Jamaica, and her turbulent marriage to an alcoholic Irish university professor who moves the family to Hong Kong, Trinidad, and finally to Australia. Derrick also shares his own journey-his early years in Jamaica, struggles in school, teenage rebellion and hatred for his parents, his dramatic conversion to Jesus Christ and call to ministry as a pastor and filmmaker, two failed marriages, straying from his Christian calling, and returning to faith in and service to Jesus Christ. It's an encouraging story of learning to trust and obey God in the midst of hardships, setbacks, and failures.

It's Worth Wading Through This Story 2012/4/24
By Marina Rojas - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
Note: The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through BookSneeze.

First of all let me say that I love books with plenty of history in them. I love details of the whys and wherefores of people, places, and things, right down to the year of when, and the reasons for why.

When I began reading A Jamaican's Journey to Time and Peace, A Memoir by Derrick Garland Coy I felt that I had hit the detail-loving reader's jackpot. Thoroughly presenting facts that appear to be extensively researched about all of the people, places and things that involve the very beginnings of Jamaica, it began as an interesting challenge to get through all of the particulars from a book that could have qualified as a required reading book for a college class.

I don't think I've ever put down a book as often as I did this one. Written with single spacing and no breaks between paragraphs, it seems to get "thick" early on. I had to take a break more often than I wanted to from reading this book because the information provided non-stop got to be simply overwhelming. I almost felt like I had an addiction I was trying to kick, wanting so bad to read the story and yet finding myself unable to continue on the information overload.

After wading through the most minute details of the birthing pains of his beloved birthplace, Coy then presents his life as he remembers it with the same painstaking approach to minutiae that one can only imagine comes from him peeking back to journals written in his younger years.

Simply put, this story went on and on and on in painstaking details that were magnificent but just overpowering at times. Personally, I enjoyed the lessons in history I was presented, found the author's family history interesting and brought them into my heart when I could wade through the waters and find the personalities waiting for discovery. I rejoiced in his ultimate victory through Christ Jesus.

This is a good read for someone who has a lot of time and absolutely insists on knowing every single aspect of a family's ancestral struggle from beginning to the current date.
Raw Memoir 2012/4/11
By Anne Green - (Amazon.com)
形式:Kindle版
Provided as a complimentary copy to me by Booksneeze, A Jamaican's Journey is one man's recounting of his multi-cultural roots and upbringing. Derrick shares his struggles to belong, to feel accepted and loved, and to make something of his life. Derrick describes his conversion to Christ in high school as being the turning point of his life. However, this pivotal decision does not prevent him from experiencing further heartache and floundering throughout his adult life.

Derrick writes with raw, unvarnished honesty in an almost confessional manner. He relates incidents including the minutest detail, perhaps as a testament to his memory. The agonies of his family history cause the reader to sympathize with Derrick, but those sympathies begin to turn to frustration as Derrick seems to perpetuate the cycle of family dysfunction in his own families despite his conversion to Christ. Forgiveness and reconciliation between Derrick, his parents, and his siblings is described, but real life change seems to be missing from Derrick's own life. Derrick himself proclaims the book to be more for his children, and I truly hope they will be able to learn from their family history and mistakes that were made. On a more applicable note for the general audience, the history of Jamaica interwoven with the history of Derrick's ancestors makes for a colorful and informative educational experience for anyone interested in Jamaican culture.
