現代の医者が幕末にタイムスリップし、医療環境的に不自由な中で、流行り病などに立ち向かっていく話｡スーパージャンプに不定期連載のマンガだが、このマンガの載るスーパージャンプほど待ち遠しいものはない。村上先生には他の連載なんか止めて、これに集中して欲しいくらいだが、時々休みながら構想を練るからこそ、高いレベルを維持できているのかもしれない。現在いくつかおもしろい医療マンガが注目を浴びているが、その中でもピカイチだと思っている。

どんな理由からか江戸時代へとタイムスリップしてしまった外科医・南方仁が、江戸の町で医者として活躍します。 江戸という街、時代背景を細部に渡ってとても良く調べてあると思います。背景までも手を抜かず、書き込まれている上、話も面白い！！ 歴史上の人物が多く登場し、仁と彼らの絡み、そして先の見えないこれからの展開が楽しみです。

村上もとかといえば，往年の名作『赤いペガサス』が思い起こされる．『赤いペガサス』でも実在の人物を交えたきわめてリアルなＦ１レース界の描写と，兄妹の枠を超えたユキ・アカバの自己犠牲的な愛が印象的だったが，30年を経た本作品でもその基調が踏襲されているのは3つ子の魂と言うべきか．しかもその完成度にはますます磨きがかかり，江戸の描写はきわめてリアルに，作画はため息が出るほど美しい．吉原遊郭の風俗や，江戸後期の医療界事情など，なかなか漫画ではお目にかかれない題材が描かれており，単に江戸風物誌として読んでも楽しめるが， ユキ・アカバに相当する2人の女性，咲と野風（後続で登場），の献身的な愛と主人公仁のひたむきな生き方が，物語に凛としたテイストと深い感動を与えている．人間の尊厳とか美しい生き方とか，今では死語となってしまった感があるが，本書を読むとそんな美徳の重要性も再考させられる．漫画好きにも漫画嫌いにも薦められる，純文学系ＳＦ漫画の傑作だ．
