Michael Coren is a Toronto-based journalist, broadcaster and author. Host of the nightly "Michael Coren Live" on CTS, his weekly newspaper column appears each Thursday in The Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg Suns and the London Free Press. He is also a regular book critic for The National Post, a columnist for The Interim, Report Magazine and Catholic Insight and a contributor to various magazines. He has written well-received biographies of CS Lewis, GK Chesterton and HG Wells.

Unauthorative and badly written

Seeing I am an admirer of Tolkien and love his stories I bought this book when I found it in the discount bin for 25 Chinese Yuan (around 4 dollar) at my local bookstore. I reckoned that, at that price it couldn't be a bad buy.
As it turned out, I was wrong.
This volume is not only simplified, unauthorative, badly written, and patronizing, but it falls far short of being any sort of biography. It is 144 pages long, but with the print being set in a ridiculously large type and only half the page used it dosen't contain many words. Perhaps it was written for children, I dont know, but even so, it is no good read. I didn't get beyond page 20 or so.
It was also written without the support of the Tolkien family or any of its associates.
To be avoided.

This slim book is a fascinating look at John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the author of the classic works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Starting with his birth in South Africa in 1892, the book shows his life, and the progression of his writing career. Along the way, the reader is given a real feeling for Mr. Tolkien, and the life that he lived.
This book, though originally written for the younger reader, is a wonderful addition to anyone's library. I especially like the way that Catholicism is treated in such a sympathetic way, just the way that Tolkien would have presented it himself. I found this book to be informative and quite interesting to read, and highly recommend it to everyone.
