ピアノ・トリオの最高峰、キース・ジャレット・トリオによる完全即興演奏集。2000年夏の欧州ツアーのライヴのロンドンでの最終公演からベスト・テイクをチョイスした内容。

スタンダーズとして発足し、文字通りスタンダード曲を素材に未曾有のピアノ・トリオ美学を築きあげてきたトリオに、初めて一つの転機が訪れたような気がする。それは舞いこんできたのではなく、ミュージシャン自身の心情が呼びこんだ結果でもあろう。キースが提案した申し出をピーコックとディジョネットが受け入れて実現した新趣向、すなわち全編がフリー・インプロヴィゼーションによる構成の作品である。新趣向とはいっても、83年に発足したときの初吹込み群の一つ『チェンジズ』で、また4年後の『チェンジレス』でもフリーな即興演奏を試みたトリオにしてみれば、未知の領域に踏みこんだわけではないかもしれない。思えば、三者の演奏が初めて記録されたピーコックの『テイルズ・オブ・アナザー』(77年)から数えたら、トリオの歴史ははや25年に達しようとしているのだ。「インプロヴァイズド・ミュージックにとって最も重要な時期はビ・バップと60年代のアヴァンギャルドの時代だ」と語ったことがあるキースが、より現代にふさわしいバップを確立するために不可欠な知と重く受けとめたフリーに再着手し、それを通してバップ再興のこれまでの運動が正当であったか否かを確かめようとした、と考えてもおかしくはない。あの発言からもう十数年。既成の曲とは違う素材で自由に即興演奏する大胆な試みを、ソロではなくトリオで全面展開する時機がついに到来した。
期待は裏切られなかった。フリーとはいっても無から有を生む類の過激なものではないが、ソロと違ってトリオではフリーな交感が一筋縄ではいかないのはいうまでもない。しかし結果は、このトリオが17年余の間にいかに信じがたいレベルの熟成を獲得していたかを示すものとなった。形式から解放された喜びの頂きに達しているときのキースの音楽が、しばしばオーネット・コールマンのそれと共振しあう場面とも久しぶりに出会って楽しかった。完璧に洗練されたスタンダーズの様式美を逆説的に示しており、タイトルがそれを象徴する。アンコールがそのスタンダード曲。心地よい解放感にしばし酔った。 (悠雅彦) --- 2001年10月号

最後の1曲を除いて全てがインプロビゼーションというスタンタードでないスタンダーズのライブ。2000年7月7月26日と28日イギリス（ロンドンのロイヤル・フェスティバル・ホール）を収録している。

最初の火の出るようなインプロビゼーションを4曲聴いて、最後の『When I Fall In Love』を聴くとなぜかほっとしてしまうのは何故だろう。若い頃の彼等は多種多様にジャズを試行錯誤して前半4曲のような毎日を送っていた。しかし、スタンダーズ以降だんだんにそういった試みはしなくなっていった。キースの難病のせいもあるだろう。新しい事への挑戦には想像を絶するエネルギーの継続が必要なのに相違ないからだ。

でも逆にここまで円熟した彼等の『今』のインプロビゼーションはどんなものなのか、それを知りたいのはファンよりもむしろ彼等自身のような気がする。

『ほっ』としてしまって枯れきってしまってスタンダードを流すような彼等を見たくない。『やりたいことをやっているんだ』という強い意志を示し、彼等の熱さが変わっていない事を証明したアルバムだと思う。

某ジャズ誌に、本作について「軟弱」、「異様なファンの盛り上がり」、「ジャズマンであることの再確認」といった辛口コメントがあったので、気になって聴き直してみた。本作はリズミックなジャズから始まり、思いがけず鮮やかに転回し、そして深く美しいメロディの世界に沈潜していく。また、ベースのソロから、キースが自在にリズムを操り、曲が転回したり。なんという鮮やかさ、まさに渋い職人芸。ほどよくはめを外したRiotもよい。これを、何かの典型に当てはめて、軟弱とか剛とかいう分類がそもそも間違っているのではないか？fade outしていることが、作品の感動にそれほど影響するのだろうか？また、キースはあくまで異端だと思うのだが、これほどまでにメジャーになり、皆が支持するようになってしまうと、確かに異端とはいいがたい。

2000年7月26・28日ロンドン、ロイヤルフェスティバルホールでのライブ。
約2年間の闘病生活の後、復活したキース。『The Melody At Night,With You』は自宅で録音できるまで回復、『Whisper Not』ではスタンダーズとしてライブに立ち、スタンダード・ナンバーを演奏できるまでに復活。そしてついに本作では、アンコールを除いて全てを3人のインプロビゼーションという、新たな挑戦を始めるまで復活を遂げた。

『生きて、演奏していくこと』のエネルギーを徐々に挑戦していくエネルギーにまで昇華していく。そこに出来上がっていく音楽、予想すらできない展開をスタンダーズは残していく。激しいインプロビゼーションの果てにアンコールで演奏する『When I Fall In Love』。まるで激しいスポーツを3人でこなした後のような清涼感がある。

髪をとても短くしたキースの新たな挑戦の始まりだ。
