2009 album from the New Orleans-based Electronica duo. TTA have landed on Ellen Allien's Berlin-based BPitch Control label and adopted a resolutely more upfront and upbeat sound, Recorded over the course of a year, Immolate Yourself is very much a departure from the Hefty label-era Telefon Tel Aviv, but Josh Eustis and Charlie Cooper have devised a sound that's at once contemporary and timeless. Vocals often remain shrouded in sonic fog, but this actually contributes to giving this album a moody touch, even when at its most upbeat. 少し80'sな印象も受ける音色、いままでの Telefon Tel Aviv じゃないみたい。
今回は地味でなにか寂しく響く音のように思えました。
彼らはハイテクな作風から徐々にシンプルになって来た気がします。

総合的には美しくも寂しい印象を受けました。


久しぶりに彼らのオフィシャルサイトにいったら、目を疑う内容が.....
メンバーの Charles Cooper が 2009/1/22 に 31 の若さで他界したことを知りました。
ご冥福を祈ります。

メンバーの悲報については他のレビューをみれば分かることなので、自分は詳しくは語りません。本当に悲しいことが起こってしまった、とだけ記します。
ただ私の願いは、この作品が結果的にcooperさんの遺作となってしまえども、TTAそのものの遺作にはなってほしくない、というものです。
名義の問題ではありません。二人で築きあげたその独特の音像を、これからも守りつづけ、発展させてほしいのです。
エレクトロニカのカテゴリーのみならず、今の音楽界においてあの音は本当に必要なものであると思えるから。
1ファンの勝手な願いですが、joshuaさんには彼の意思を受け継いでもらいたいです。

アルバムごとに新しい要素を意欲的に取り入れる彼らですが、今回標榜するテーマは「エレポップ」。
このキーワードを最初に目にした時、自分は正直不安でした。
昨今のニューウェーブリバイバル・ムーブメントに安易に感化されてしまったのではないかと感じたのです。
作品は数多くでてはいるが、中々個性や主張のある作品には会えないな、というのがこのムーブメントに対する正直な感想です。
例えばパンク→グランジへ移行する際のような、新しい価値観やアイデアの付与が見られない。今の時代にやる意義を見出せないのです。
・・・もしそんな思いを抱いている人が他にもいるのなら、この作品、オススメです。
上記の問題に対して、最良とはいえないまでも、かなりユニークな回答のひとつであると思います。
私の懸念はまったくの杞憂でした。やっぱりTTAは凄かった。
自身の揺ぎ無いサウンドイメージをもってして、新しいエレポップサウンドを世に提示する作品を作り上げました。

サウンドプロダクションはかなり変化していて、今までのトレードマークだった耳を突くような鋭角・グリッチノイズは影を潜めています。
80'Sエレポップの文法にかなり忠実な面もみられ、初聴だと「？」と感じるところもあるかも。「ホントにTTA？」と。
しかし神経質でナイーブな旋律、ひんやりとした感触の上品なエレクトロ・サウンドスケープ、そしてそのシリアスな雰囲気に身を任せるうち、
紛れもない彼らの音を聞いているのだという実感が沸いてくる。「やっぱTTAやな」と。
どことなく人を寄せ付けないインテリジェントを感じさせるくせに、ハマると何度も効きたくなってしまうのがこの音のニクいところです。
特に注目したいのがメロディーです。
エレクトロニカの中でもTTAかなりリピート耐性があるように感じるのは、やっぱりメロの良さからなんだろうと思うのですが、今作で言えば特にM1、M10のメロが素晴らしい。
エレポップというジャンルにおいても埋もれることなくそのシリアスなメロディーを主張しています。
他には「テクノデリック」を思わせるM6も面白いし、退廃的音響ののちに切ないボーカルがささやくM8＆M9もいい。
エレクトロニカを通過した新しいエレポップの形としては十分すぎる作品です。

エレクトロニカというサブカルチャー的な視点で見られがちなジャンルにおいて、彼らはメインストリームにも対抗できるくらいのアイデアと独創性を持っている。
自分が惚れたのも正にそこで、知名度とは関係無しに放つその存在感は正にアーティストシップそのものだな、カッコイイなと感じていた。
これからTTAがどうなるのかは分からないけど、是非、この次も聞かせてほしい。待っています。

１ｓｔは名作インストで、次がVo入りだったため
以降スルーしてましたが、今作では、Voも加工され、
インスト部分にマッチし、違和感がありません。

不協電子音が、美しく構築されており、それに埋もれそうなVoが
悲しく響き、高揚感は無いですが、
冷感で覚醒させられるような、独特の世界を展開しています。

今後、Telefon Tel Avivがどうなるか判りませんが
正直、どうしても不幸な出来事と作品を作った時の精神状態と
地続きな印象を受けます。非常に残念です。
