This release is dedicated to Sting's favorite season, Winter: a season which has inspired countless songwriters over the centuries and produced a wealth of music exploring all of its many guises. If On a Winter's Night... presents an arc of songs that conjures the season of spirits, resulting in a haunting, spiritual and reflective musical journey. ''The theme of winter is rich in inspiration and material,'' comments Sting; ''by filtering all of these disparate styles into one album, I hope we have created something refreshing and new.''
Album Description
If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent S馮al (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter.

『ラビリンス』よりも幅広く受け容れられそうなアルバム。『ラビリンス』は、全編リュート弾き語りのダウランド作品集で、しかも歌とほぼ交互に手紙の朗読が入っていて、もともとダウランドに関心のある私でも正直最後まで聴きとおすのはなかなか辛かった。（せめて朗読が３つか４つならよかったのだが…。）
それに比べると、「冬」がテーマの今作は、全体としてはトラッド系の雰囲気が強めだが、彼らしいサウンドも聴けて、従来のファンにもあまり違和感なく受け容れられるだろう。1曲目を聴いた限りでは前作の延長と思うかもしれないが、2曲目で驚かされる。これはピーター，ポール＆マリーの「ア・ソーリン」だ！（本当に同じ歌で、作詞作曲のクレジットにポール・ストゥーキーの名もある。）あの名曲がいかにもスティング風の歌に衣替えしていて、これはこれでとても魅力的だ。ただ、もとは古くからあるハロウィン関連の歌とはいえ、彼自身の解説にＰＰＭへの言及が一切ないのと、 この曲で自分は「善き者よ、神が汝らを安んぜんことを」(“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”) というクリスマス・ソングを取り入れたと言いながら実際にはＰＰＭが既に「ア・ソーリン」でその歌を取り入れていたことに触れていないのは、少々納得いかない気がする。（その分星一つ減点。）
その他、彼のリュートが聴ける３曲目、小説『宝島』などで知られるＲ．Ｌ．スティーヴンソンの詩に曲をつけた格好よい５曲目、今年生誕350年とされるイギリスの作曲家パーセルの曲にイギリスの有名な詩人ドライデンの詩という組み合わせの７曲目、スティング・オリジナルの10曲目、シューベルト作の14曲目、バッハの曲にスティングが詞をつけた15曲目など、いろいろと興味深い。なお、日本盤はさらに２曲のボーナス付きのうえＳＨＭ−ＣＤ（限定盤）なので、どうせならそちらがおすすめ（その分そちらより一つ減点）。ＤＶＤはメイキングとスティング自身による解説。
