この本では、HTTPプロトコルをベースに、コネクション管理・プロキシー・キャッシング・検索エンジン・クッキー・認証・暗号化といった応用技術がわかりやすく説明されています。

特徴的なのは、処理を説明する図表が豊富なだけではなく、説明文がそれぞれに付けられていることです。他の本では漫然と図が載せられていることもありますが、本書では図表がきちんと理解されるように配慮されています。図表と文章の割合もバランスがとれています。

優れた点をもう1つ挙げると、表題となっているHTTP技術だけでなく、下位の通信プロトコルや周辺技術も併せて解説している点が挙げられます。コネクション管理の項ではTCPコネクションについて、SSLの説明では暗号化技術について、また国際化の観点ではキャラクタットとエンコーディングの違いについてといった具合に、Web技術を支える各種の基本技術について適切なレベルで要領よく説明が加えられています。本書を通読することで、読者は自身の技術的な穴を埋めつつ、HTTPを中心としたWeb技術全般を理解することができます。

記述は平易な英語でなされており、読みやすい文章です。執筆陣がInktomiのスタッフのせいかキャッシング技術の説明が多めですが、総合的に優れた一冊と言えるでしょう。
