セールス的成功とは別に、内容面では大きな変化を感じさせる。ペイジのリフ中心の構築ギターが完成の域に達する一方で、J・P・ジョーンズによるメロトロンやキーボードの導入も始まる貪欲な作品。“永遠の詩”、甘くて切ない“レイン・ソング”、“丘の向こうに”、”ノー・クウォーター”、が代表曲だが、野蛮なファンク曲”グランジ”の重厚でたらめサウンドはインパクト有り。ゼップ史上最も進取の姿勢激しいアルバムか。

ペイジによるとZEPのデビュー前に「IV」までの構想はだいたい出来ていたらしい。このアルバムから後期ZEPという分けかたが良いと思っているが、ファンク色を大幅に強め、かといって黒人R&Bに単に追随するのでもなく、形容しがたい独特のグルーブを形成していく。

活動中も解散後長い間も、ZEPといえば元祖ハードロックという評価が普通であった。ZEP音楽の多様さが正しく評価されるようになったのは、後期ZEPに絶大な影響を受けたファンクロック勢が続出した90年代になってからのことである。そしてミクスチャー・ロックはロックのメインストリームとして現在まで続いているのであり、後期ZEP路線のスタートがじつはロック史にとって重大な出来事であったことが、今になってみると分かる。

曲ごとに奇妙な変拍子、変則チューニングが続出で、ペイジのリフの魔術が遺憾なく発揮されている。一方で冗長なインプロを捨て黒人音楽の直截さに迫るようでいて、他方で人工的な無国籍音楽に向かうようでもあり、この奇妙な感覚をアルバムジャケットはうまく表現している。

ギターの腕前で叩かれることが多いペイジであるが、このアルバムの頃はかなり安定している。(5)のリフなんかはかなりムズい。練習しないと音が途中でしぼんでしまう。

個人的にZEPのベストアルバムに挙げたい。初めて聴いたとき、違和感とともに新しい分野が開けた気になったのをおぼえている。

「本当はこの作品を聞かせるために、大衆を分かりやすい４枚で引っ張って来たのではないか？」という仮説は間違いであろうか？私はこのアルバムこそＺＥＰがというより、ジミー・ペイジとロバート・プラントが作りたかった作品だろうと思っている。解散してから、様々な彼らの嗜好がわかってくると実に多種多様な趣味、興味が渾然一体となった世界を目指していたように思えてくる。もうこれはハード・ロックと呼べるようなものでなく、唯一無比「レッド・ツエッペリン・ワールド」です。
