This is one of the most informational and moving books (although a novel) I've read on the horrendous attitude Americansas they related to minorities, and the confusion/hardship experienced by minorities, young and old during the war. We react to what we are taught. And when we are taught things based on lack of information or prejudice, the result is the powerful take advantage of those without power. However, this book shows that there are people who exercise the benefit of a doubt when what one sees, hears and feels don't match. Giving people space to so that their real heart is revealed is important. The sad thing is that no matter who we are, can come through life without our prejudices showing, however, everyone has a choice to follow their fallen nature or be something greater.

第二次世界大戦中とその40年後を行き来しながら、シアトルの中国移民二世と日本人移民二世の間の甘くて切ないラブ・ストーリーです。
作者はこれが長編第1作とは思えない、巧みなストーリーを、これまたニクイ位の感情を抑えた筆致で展開させます。分り合えない父親と息子、全ての人々が各々の立場で抱く家族への愛が様々なバリエーションで語られます。特筆すべきは作者の登場人物への万遍ない愛情で、基本的に悪人はおらず、読者も全ての登場人物が好きになることでしょう。名盤に捨て曲なしと言いますが、本作に無駄キャラ（？）は一切ありません。
作者自身も中国系移民四世とのことで、後書きで歴史的事実を良い悪いではなく中立的に描いたと言っていますが、その通りで戦時中の出来事を淡々と、暗くならずに且つ公正に描ききったバランス感覚にはおそれいりました。
実に久し振りに素晴らしい小説に巡り合った幸せを感じました。リアルに泣けます、と言うか私は号泣でした。花粉症でマスクをかけていなければ、電車の中で相当恥ずかしい思いをするところでした。作者のJamieという名ですが、男だったのにも驚かされました。裏表紙のKeikoと思われるオカッパ頭の女の子の写真がとっても素敵です。

Thinking about the tragedies of war, we mainly come up with the incident within own nation. We Japanese rarely pay attention to this kind of scene of WW'U. But there were these story in that era, surely. This story provide us with flesh eye on the incident in the other side of Pacific.
All characters in this story have their own belief and consciousness and struggle to get through that era. Their attitude to own fates is absolutely impressing to me, giving great heartwarming. Regardless of our nationalities, the book is worthy of being read by anyone of these countries, China, Japan,US. Reading this book, we can share the tragedy caused by the war and the pure love resisting the time and tough situations. As I mentioned, everyone in the book shows strong will, the way they live. That's why I love this story and strongly recommend to anyone.
