Sir Adrian Boult was a close friend of Elgar, and he conducted the world premiere of
The Planets as long ago as 1915. His remake of the Holst dates from some 60 years later! It's an amazing achievement for a man pushing 90, and his authority in the music remains unquestioned. The same holds true for the
Enigma Variations, a piece that Boult probably conducted about a billion times. It's an idiomatic, affecting performance, though neither the Elgar nor the Holst will win any awards for orchestral precision. That wasn't Boult's way. Rather, he offers an unassuming warmth and naturalness, combined with a really good sense of when to ram home the climaxes. At midprice, this is a recommended coupling.
