もう取り戻せない時間を悔やんだり、失ってきたものの重さに押しつぶされそうな時に、不思議と取り出してしまうのがこのアルバムです。
代償を払い、今までツケにしてきたことを返して行きながらも、これから生きて行こうとする者にとってのサウンドトラック。

　圧倒的な傑作「The Pretender」の次々作。リリースされた１９８０年は就職をした年。札幌から出てきて気ままに大学時代を過ごしたときに聴いた「The Pretender」に感動し涙を流してしまった後、新しく始まる社会人としての不安な東京での生活で、明かりを射してくれた音楽としていつまでも記憶に残るCDです。
　これ以降、彼のCDは聴いていないので正当な評価は出来ませんが、「Hold Out」と「The Pretender」は私のMindに影響を与えた音楽であることに間違いない。今、当時の純粋な気持ちを持ち続けていられたら、どのような人生を送っていたのだろうかと感慨深く聴いてしまう。
　Re-Masterされた音は素晴らしく、LP並みの音圧が心地よい。今更ながら、さぁもう少し残りの人生を自分らしくやってみようと思ってしまう。これだから音楽はやめられない。

ジャクソン・ブラウンを初めて聞いたのがこの作品でした。

ジャクソン・ブラウンはこの作品からダメになっていったという人が結構いますが、私はそう思いません。「コール・イット・アローン」、「オブ・ミッシング・パーソンズ」「ヴールヴァード」なんて、今聞いても凄く良い曲だという思いは変わっていません。（「ホールド・オン・ホールド・アウト」の独白は赤面してしまいますが）

ジャクソン・ブラウンの魅力を知るには欠かせない一枚でしょう。
