Older Versions more comprehensive

I have the 1992 version of this book. The 1992 version has a MUCH better history taking section & differential diagnosis section.
The current edition is also missing common topics seen in ward medicine: ascites, alcoholic liver disease, peritonitis, and alcohol withdrawal to name a few.
Too bad, the 1992 version was a great book, I carried it for years as a med student & resident, & still have it.

good for the beginner

This book is good for med students on their first clinical rotation. It will give an overview of how to frame your history and physical, questions to ask, tests to order, and long differentials. With a few months of experience, this book is not really necessary. I rarely use it now at the end of MS3.

Very helpful for taking and writing H&Ps.

This book breaks each chief complaint down into an H&P. It then tells you exactly the types of questions and physical exam findings you should look for given that chief complaint. Perfect for those (including myself!) who are still trying to figure out the relevant information for a given symptom/cc.
