Good, better, but not Best.,

I play a lot of 4E, and this is not really 4E. It is good, don't get me wrong, but it is not really 4E. The classes are simpler, and some of them play easier, which may not be bad for a new players, but as the levels go up, the utility of the classes goes down. Each class is very similar to other characters made with the same class, and as the levels go up, that does not change. This product makes the low levels (1-6 or so) a lot better , but really starts to fall down after that, even with other essentials products.

I was really impressed this WotC product. I was really looking forward to a new set of simpler and more traditional set of rules for 4e ever since the original core books came out. I had problem with the fighter having too many powers, the rogue not really feeling very sneaky and the wizard not being very unique with his spell casting powers when many other classes had powers that felt the same. This book however provides options for the four basic classes which go back to the original style of the D&D core classes. The fighter feels like a warrior that can both take and do damage without feeling like he is nominating himself to be the parties punching bag. The thief feels really sneaky and has a number of new ticks that can give him an advantage in a fight. The cleric can finally fend for himself and heal at the same time quite effectively without having to choose one of the other. Lastly, the mage has a broader range of spells to choose from due to the inclusion of spell book rules, plus the ability to specialise in particular schools of magic. The sum up the WotC have finally nailed it for me in this book and sold me 4e. Although there are some down sides to this book like the redundant information in the first part of the book which can easily be found in other essentials D&D products. However, all in all it is a great addition to the table and really is a throw back to the old school character styles.
