I had initially added this book to my wish list, thinking I would get it for myself as a treat later on. But when I saw a stack of them at Anthropologie, I couldn't resist treating myself a little early. As with the Baileys' previous work Simple Home: Calm Spaces for Comfortable Living, this book is a visual masterpiece of tranquil, colorful scenes. However, unlike the monastic simplicity of "Simple Home," the rooms in "Handmade Home" are warmer, more personable, with lots of vibrant color where it counts. The text reads like it's picked up where "Simple Home" left off -- carefully edited collections, balancing natural materials with man-made, and limited color pallets, but this time the emphasis is on the handmade, crafted, and artisanal. Delightful photos of hand-dyed wool, beach stones hand-smoothed into whimsical shapes, hand-sewn curtains made from vintage linen or old cotton tea towels, earthenware teapots & dishes, among many other things. Great mini-tours of other people's homes covering a range of looks and dwelling sizes -- ultra-modern to flea market chic, sprawling country house to tiny urban apartment. A lovely manifesto for living simply and well.
