This omnibus was my introduction to the vast world of Warhammer 40k, and I must say I was hooked from the start. The First book, "GUNHEADS" was written quite well! The plot and character development was great! The story kept you hooked and you start to get attached to the main characters, almost as if you're part of their unit. The battle scenes didn't disappoint either; very descriptive, and very unforgiving, with a constant sense desperation; wondering how the heck is the crew going to get out of this one? You even get the feeling that you're right there in the tank, feeling the concussion after firing the main gun!
In "ICE GUARD", you get a different feel about the Imperial Guard, a more rag-tag "Spec-ops" feel to it. But you definitely still feel like you're right there in the action, and when the las-bolts fly, you almost feel like you want to toss the team spare ammo from your kit and let'em know they're going to get through it.
"DESERT RAIDERS", was grim and hopeless (the story that is), but as you read on you cant help but hope that help is on its way, just hold a little longer gents!!
Each book does well to give the reader a feel for the Imperial Guard, and does well to where the reader can actually find relate with the characters. It also does well to introduce 3 enemies of the Imperium of Man and give an idea of how hostile and brutal the galaxy is. And all the guardsman have are each other.
