When I purchased this, I hoped it would at least contain photos of various guest rooms, including items that helped guests feel welcome. But this book FAR exceeded my expectations, not only helping inspire me to update my guest room but to think about what about what makes a home feel inviting.
Since reading this book, I've added a few extra touches to my guest room, helping ensure that everything is in place for anyone staying at our home. I was also able to try and think about what guests would truly appreciate, from meals to a peaceful retreat, cushy towels, nice lighting, etc. There are also plenty of ideas to appeal to guests' sense of smell, touch, and taste, from a single flower in a bud vase placed on a table to a lovely pear in a small dish. Again, the emphasis isn't on expensive items but on welcoming gestures, the simple touches that let visitors know they are not an imposition.
Plenty of excellent and colorful photos help round out this book. There were also lovely quotes interspersed with rooms of all sorts, from modest to more impressive. Even tiny nooks and crannies were shown as rooms for children. The author focuses on being a good host rather than impressing guests with swank decor. I find that very appealing - and refreshing!
