This volume collects two cases of the Gotham Special Crimes Unit. First, The Joker terrorizes the city at Christmastime when he begins randomly executing people with a rifle, and no one from the Mayor on down is safe. A second story focuses on an old case and unfinished business for disgraced detective Harvey Bullock.

One of the Strongest Stories in the Series

Gotham Central was one of the best comic series going. Told from the perspective of the Gotham City PD detectives who are trying their best to keep a city that is continually on the brink of madness from going over the edge, it reads like a script to NYPD Blue. If Batman has more than a page of ink per three issue series, it is amazing. And when the caped crusader makes a rare appearance, it isn't always a welcomed one. Afterall when your in the GCPD, you don't have the tools, the gadgets, the freedom from due process, or the backing of the Justice League...you have a gun, a heart, a brain, and a lot of guts.
You live with the knowledge that there is a vigilante who makes you look incompetent; a myth that has brought a level of craziness into your city that did not exist before his arrival; and you live in a constant mixed state of respect and loathing for "The Bat." It was a great series and this TPB is the best of it.
I almost wish that this TPB did not have Joker on the cover holding the sniper rifle. The reveal of him as the sniper terrorizing the streets of Gotham during the busy Christmas shopping season is one of the beset reveals in comics. It quickly pushes the stakes over the top and makes you feel for the characters. But even knowing he is coming will not detract from the greatness of this read. Enjoy!

Excellent book

Having thoroughly enjoyed Vol IV, then going back to reading Vol I, II III, I can say that Vol II is better than Vol I, and is as good as Vol IV.
The writing is terrific and the mostly great artwork by Michael Lark puts this on a par with the terrific Daredevil series by Bendis and Maleev.
Renee Montoya is truly fleshed out here as a real life character.
Gotham without Batman is truly enlightening.

Batman is absent...and it's surprisingly awesome.

Understand this is a crime story/drama within Gotham city and the Batman universe. Gotham Central is a refreshing and compelling series but if you're looking for a BATMAN fix, I wouldn't necesarilly recommend this for you. There are confrontations with Batman's villians and Batman himself occasionally intercedes but the story revolves around the members of the Gotham P.D.
For those that have been following the series, this is another excellent entry that continues to provide more depth to its characters and really expands the Gotham city universe.
This is Detective Comics without that looming, dark bat as the detective. If you liked the first volume, "In the Line of Duty", nothing should be stopping you from picking this one up.
