Digitally Remastered Reissue of their 1977 Offering which Proved to Be One of their Most Successful Outings Ever. "a Lot of Good Things Came Together on the Album", Recalls Woolly Wlstenholme. "Some of John's Best Material Like "Poor Man's Moody Blues" and "Hymn" Sat Well Alongside Les' "Spirit on the Water" and So On." This Re-release Includes Five Bonus Tracks Not Included on the Original Vinyl Edition.

最近ドラマーのメルが突然の心臓発作で亡くなってしまったが、他のメンバーはそれぞれ元気に活動している。彼らが77年に、ロック史上最高のアートワークと、裏ジャケットに象徴される美しい叙情性に溢れた9曲をこの世に送り出したこのアルバムは、特にブリティッシュ・ロックがお好きな方には耳にとどめておいていただきたいものだ。ギターは早弾きの箇所などないし、折り重なるキーボードもゆったりとしているが、美しいヴォーカルメロディやコーラスと相まって、音楽はテクニックではないことを証明してくれる。
素晴らしいアルバムである。

７７年発表、バークレイ・ジェイムス・ハーヴェストの通算１１作目。
ジャケット、コーラス、演奏、楽曲。
どれを取っても“美しい”としか表現のしようのない。
本作はまさにそんなアルバムです。

まず１曲目の「ヒム」を聴いた時点で、期待感は絶頂に達します。
アコースティック・ギターの分厚くきらびやかなイントロに、
やさしいメロディ。徐々に盛り上がっていく展開。
そして、非の打ちどころのない完璧なコーラス・ワーク‥‥。

続く２曲目の「ラヴ・イズ・ライク・ア・ヴァイオリン」を聴けば、
本作が冒頭の「ヒム」だけのアルバムでないことにも気付きます。

それらに代表されるように穏やかな楽曲が目を引く一方で、
「フレンド・オブ・マイン」や「ハード・ハーテッド・ウーマン」など
彼ららしいメロディアスなギター・ワークが光るロック・ナンバーもバランスよく収録されています。
また、今回忘れてはいけないのがジャケット・アートです。
紙ジャケはＥ式シングルジャケットの特殊仕様。
ジャケット表の真ん中部分が繰り抜かれており、
その部分から内袋の梟の絵が見える仕組みになっています。
森の中で演奏しているかのような裏ジャケもキマッてます。

音源は2003年リマスター。
ボーナス・トラックとして本作収録曲のシングル・バージョンなどが収録されていますが、
「メディスン・マン」などを聴くと、本作で見せたのとはまた違った一面が見られます。

作品のジャンルとしてはプログレに分類されると思います。
タイプ的にはイエスやクリムゾンのように手数で勝負するのではなく、
ピンク・フロイドのような幻想的で、“間”を聴かせるようなタイプです。
親しみやすいポップさも持ち合わせているので、ＥＬＯが好きな方にもお薦めです。

77年作。彼らはもともとポップで聞きやすい作風だったが、これは更にポップな印象。とても洗練された、無駄のない美しさ。ボワ〜っとした淡い色合い、ほのぼの田園風味、幻想的、繊細で甘美なメロディ。
「Hymn」はフォーク風のシンプルな歌とアコースティックギターに、オルガン、弦楽、金管楽器などが徐々に加わっていき、シンフォニックに盛り上がっていく。「Love Is Like A Violin」はうっとりしたまま眠ってしまいそうなほど神秘的で美しいムードから軽やかに駆け出す。「Friend Of Mine」はキャッチー、乾いた響き。「Poor Man’s Moody Blues」は切ない名曲。ある雑誌がこのバンドのことを「Poor Man’s Moody Blues」と評したことに腹を立てて作った曲。あえてムーディーブルースの「Night In White Satin」を真似て作っている。「Hard Hearted Woman」はキュート、ちょっと気が抜けたようなイメージ。コーラスが心地良い。「Sea Of Tranquility」はこのバンドの王道って気がする曲。本作では特にこの曲が好きだ。切なくも力強く訴えかけるボーカル、勇壮なオーケストラが響きわたり、メロディアスにうなるギターも存在感がある。歌詞は宇宙開発競争を批判したもの。「Spirit On The Water」は毛皮のために動物を殺すことを批判した曲。これまたコーラスのハーモニーが素晴らしい。「Leper’s Song」はこのアルバムの中ではハードでパワフル。シンセのピコピコ可愛らしい音色が時代を感じさせます。「Taking Me Higher」は荘厳なオルガンが響く、静謐なエンディングナンバー。
