Buddy Holly possessed plain looks, heavy-framed glasses, an all-American smile and a hiccup of a voice. In his mind, however, he was a rock and roll star and, in a self-fulfilling prophecy over the course of a three-year recording career, he changed the face of music and influenced a generation of teenagers. Immortalised in song many times since his untimely death, Holly's legacy was immediate and apparent, rather than being "the day the music died". His straightforward barrage of guitars, untrained voice and ordinary looks persuaded teenagers the world over that they didn't have to be Elvis Presley to be rock stars. Thousands of bands were formed, all trying to get that Buddy Holly sound. That only a few got close is testament to just how well crafted these songs, steeped in the Southern traditions of gospel and country, really are. Thousands imitated, no one bettered. --
