"Gods of Greektown" is an insightful, penetrating, and serious exploration into the world of the North American Greek Immigrant lifestyle and the politics and machinations that go on 'day to day' in that sub-culture, which most people believe is tamed under the rubric of the Greek Orthodox Church and the old Greek culture. Nothing is further from the truth and this book exploits that fact, going on to expose and indict those "white collar" nominalistic shells of materialism and greed who don't cause harm to the non-Greek world, but instead, turn on their own Greek "friends" setting them up, betraying them, stealing from them, stabbing them in the back (not literally), and so on. The Greek community (probably like many ethnic communities) is essentially involved in internecine warfare. They escaped the Nazis, they escaped the Communists, to come to North America to pursue "the dream." Was it "all for one and one for all"? No, rather it is a world of gossip and envy and sacrilege -- do the priests of the Greek Orthodox Church know all of this? They must! Do they do anything? No. It is a "dog eat dog" immoral world and I have never seen as much hatred within a community as I have seen in this ethnic community. That said, there are "true friends" and "brethren" who try and do the right thing, living according to that higher moral code of conduct that we are all supposed to live by. The author's insight into all of these sociological facts (and balance) is set into a very interesting narrative - a real page turner. He takes us through the cafes of Greektown (which most big North American cities have), he takes us back to the homeland to discover the roots of these animosities. This book is not only for the "Greek" reader. Indeed, not only will "anyone" enjoy the suspense here, but the children of European immigrants especially will benefit and identify from this wonderful read and from the truths the author has laid out before us. Again, great read!
