This book is a "must have" for anyone interested in maiko and geiko and I would strongly recommend it.
Mr. Foster gathered beautiful portraits of four of these "women of arts" as well as their interviews. The book also offers precious information on the geisha dances, ochaya and okiya, etc.
Even though I've finished reading the whole book, I can't help myself but opening it again and again to look at the beautiful pictures !

Interesting story and great photographs

What struck me first was all the great photographs of the Maiko and Geisha. The book also provided an understanding of what life is like for the Maiko and Geisha, and the journey of an American photographer/writer into their culture and the friendships he cultivated among them. All in all, and interesting book about Maiko, Geisha, the journey of the photographer/writer, and the great photographs.

This book contains hundreds of fantastic photos of Maiko and Geiko (otherwise known as Geisha) from the Kyoto Gion. Each page is filled with a lovely photo and a byline that is in a question /answer style-interview format with each subject being photographed. The photos are so fantastic that I also ordered the author's first book, "100 views of Geisha and Maiko in Gion".
