Martin's Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. Put down that annoying Jordan book and pay attention. This has got to be one of the best fantasy series you'll ever read. It's well written, with interesting characters and a plot that keeps you on your toes. If you're even just a casual fantasy reader, you'll love this one.

This book is great.
Some say Martin was inspired by Tolkien, but I think he writes much better than Tolkien. The story is always tense enough to keep you turning the pages, but it never over-does the action or naughty bits.
Very detailed and straightforward, but will always keep you guessing what's going to happen next!

If you have seen the HBO series, the show does a pretty good job of staying true to this book. It's a story of large proportions, which is set in a faux England about 1000 years ago, with a bit of fantasy thrown in with the knights and royalty. Each chapter is titled with the character's name whose point of view it describes, and the story follows the kingdom's plight as it falls into war. There is a lot going on in the complicated plot, however the author has done an amazing job of keeping it clear and exciting.
This is a real page turner of a book and I can't wait to get into the sequels!
