This is an outstanding compilation. Remastered from material recorded between 1962 and 1965, what's instantly apparent on hearing Alexander's plaintive tones is what a debt groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones owed to this sweet-voiced Southern country-soul pioneer from Alabama. The former covered his tragic, harmony-laden "Anna", the latter romped through "You Better Move On". Other artists who've sung Alexander-penned songs include Elvis Presley, Robert Plant and Tina Turner. Without exception, Alexander sang the originals better: in a soft, low crooning style somewhat akin to Sam Cooke, but with more expression in his smouldering voice. And, always, he was the loser in his bittersweet love affairs. An album for romantics and lovers of soft-centred soul. --Everett True
Album Description
This CD has been one of Ace's most popular since its release in June 1989, both in terms of sales and critical approval.
17 years on it was beginning to appear slightly dated and so we have taken the opportunity to bring its appearance bang up-to-date with a brand new cover and booklet.
Arthur of course, has the distinction of inspiring both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, and the definitive versions are here of both `Anna (Go To Him)' and `You Better Move On'.
The note is written by Arthur's biographer, Richard Younger who, ironically, was first turned on to Arthur by Ace's original LP release, "A Shot Of Rhythm And Soul".

以前、ViViDから出ていた「ジ・アルティミット」という日本盤コンピレーションを持っていますが、このアルバムは音質が又違うような気が…。たいした再生装置で聴き比べたわけでは無いですが。 アーサー歴の浅い私ですが、この洒落たR&Bとも言える歌と演奏は他には少ないのでは? このアルバムを聴いていると、マージービートがよくかかっていた、昔行きつけだった京都の“スタークラブ”というバーを思い出します! もちろん、マスターはビートルズが好きなギタリストでね!

ビートルズやストーンズにカバーされたAnnaやYou Better Move Onを始めとした、ナッシュヴィルのドット・レコードから出された曲と未発表の曲の編集盤です。「南部ソウルの名曲を数々生み出したリック・ホールのフェイム・スタジオの礎となった」ということで聞いてみましたが、カントリーのカバー曲があるのは当然としても60年代初期の夢見がちなポップスの影響もあるアレンジに拍子抜けしました。とはいえ、時代の制約がある中でほのぼのとした歌いっぷりにも後のエモーショナルなソウルの片鱗が見られるし、カントリーもソウルも何でも来いという雑食の私にしてみればなかなか楽しめる一枚です。

ALEXANDERはANNAやソルジャーオブ・ラブのニ曲が本当にたまりません。このニ曲の為にこのCDを買ったくらいです。ビートルズのANNAも良いですが,本家本元も最高です。聞く価値あり
