second editionの日本語版も出ていますが、やはり英語は英語で理解していくのが上達の一番の早道だと思います。現在・過去・未来・may,might,shouldなどの基本的な内容が中心ですが、膨大な練習問題と（日本語版よりも問題数は多い）、非常にわかりやすくかつ詳しい文法解説は読み進めるうちにあまりに内容が濃すぎて頭がクラクラしてしまいました(笑）。問題を１つ１つ地道に時間をかけてこなしていくもよし、わかるところは読み流してピンポイントで使うもよし、確かに安い買い物ではありませんが決して損はしません（しかし、answer keyに一部間違いがあるので、問題を解く時にくれぐれもご注意を！）これとお馴染みの「understanding and using english grammar」さえあれば、他の全ての文法書は必要ない、と言っても過言ではありません。ただ、こちらは解答つきですが、全く同じ表紙で同じ内容で回答がついていない物もあるので、購入の際くれぐれもご注意を・・・

私が語学留学していたときの学校のテキストだった。洋書英文法の教科書。Basic English Grammar, Understanding and Using English Grammarの姉妹編。洋書で、独習では難しい部分もあるが、難解な専門用語を極力避け、例文も分かりやすい。問題数が多く、英作文の練習にもなる。このシリーズに上級者向け（日本で言う大学受験レベルを網羅したもの）がないのが非常に惜しい。なぜなら、分かりやすい解説と大量の練習問題で基礎を徹底するテキストは他にほとんどないからである。少し残念なのが、姉妹編と重複する点があまりに多いこと。今後改訂するならば、もう少し変化をつけて欲しい。
