Eliot Greenspan is a poet, journalist, musician, and travel writer who took his backpack and typewriter the length of Mesoamerica before settling in Costa Rica in 1992. Since then, he has worked steadily as a travel writer, food critic, freelance journalist, and translator, and continued his travels in the region. He is the author of Frommer’s Belize, Frommer’s Ecuador, Frommer’s Guatemala, Costa Rica for Dummies, and Costa Rica Day By Day, as well as the chapter on Venezuela in Frommer’s South America.

nice semi-glossy guidebook for independent travelers

Some guidebooks like the DK Insight books are full of big glossy photos, but have relatively poor depth and breadth. Other guidebooks like Lonely Planet have great breadth, but few photos so it is hard to distinguish one location from another. This Frommer's book is somewhere in between. There are lots of photos, but none are full page. The book covers all the major tourist districts as well as many lesser known areas. Frommer's also has reviews of restaurants, hotels, and local attractions all over the country (though not as many as Lonely Planet). If your'e travelling independently, you're probably not going to exclusively use the reviewed accommodations and activities, but they should give you a flavor for what to expect in various parts of the country.

I've been planning a trip to Costa Rica for several years, and this is the best guide that I have read yet.
Not only does Frommer's Guide cover the basics, e.g., getting there, eating, lodging, and transportation, the book is loaded with illustrations, photos, insightful comments, and helpful diagrams.
Travel Guides often fail because of one of two extremes being too inclusive, or being so general as to not give specific enough guidance.
The Frommer's Guide takes an excellent middle of the road approach.
While all travel guides try to convey where to go, the Frommer's Guide for Costa Rica is also willing to tell you where to avoid.
As a frugal traveler who values personal safety, I appreciate that. (Sadly, there are many areas in Costa Rica that are dodgy now that were perfectly safe a few years back, but I would rather know than be caught in a risky situation unaware.)
I found the nightlife descriptions and the shopping sections for each area to be the most unique and helpful in the Guide.
Pick up this book and prepare to enjoy the Pura Vida of Costa Rica!

Great colorful guide! I know everyone brings their iPads, smart phones, GPS on trips these days. But it's still nice to have a book in your pack. I love gadgets but sometimes there are those sticky situations (no signal, low battery, stolen/lost devices...)the they really let you down. This is a great back up.
Even with adbundant info on the web, I would still buy these books just to use as inspiration or for pre-trip planning!I would also bring them with me on trips as they fun to look at during long plane rides or use at nights in hotels to plan next day's itinerary... Contains lots of great information, wonderful color photos, maps...
