First, this isn't an insider's guide. The things that you'll find here are the same things that you'll find in virtually any tourist guide to Boston. Take the Freedom Trail. Visit the Old North Church. Go on a Duck Tour. Yadda yadda yadda.
Realistically, there are great suggestions in here. But they tend to be buried in huge mounds of other information. For example, if I wanted a guide that was going to tell me where to go for Indian food, I wouldn't want to see something like, "Here's a list of sixteen restaurants that serve Indian." Unless you are LIVING in Boston, or going on a strange, Indian-food-only trip, that's just too many. Three, MAYBE four, and that's enough. In an effort to be comprehensive, the author went overboard.
In addition, there's a bit of a Downtown bias. Boston, more than many large cities, is a town of neighborhoods. Go to Back Bay and see the shops. Go to the South End or the North End to get good Irish and Italian communities. But, other than day trips to places like Lexington or the Cape (which are only about an hour's or so drive away), they basically suggest spending all of your time in Boston's downtown area, and highly limit their discussion of any of the near-burbs. Which is too bad, really. There's some great Chinese food in Lexington, for example, and some great Mexican food in Chelsea. Leaving them out for the overpriced locations near Park Street seems a shame.
There are a few things missing here. For example, there was no list of "Neighborhoods to Avoid", other than a reference here or there to avoid South Boston (i.e., "Don't confuse the South End with South Boston."). They never mentioned that you should probably avoid Dorchester, and if you find yourself in the place after dark, don't do yourself the additional disservice of carrying a pizza, lest you be the subject of an armed robbery.
In short, it's got all of the information that you probably would use for a week or so visit to the city. But it is missing a lot of the information that you would like to see as a resident of Boston, or a person who doesn't want to spend all of their time in the downtown area. With that caveat in mind, it's good, but it's not great.
