i have been a fan of madonna her whole career and i love these sweet books..the illustrator did a fabulous job and the whole book is cheerful and fun...
Each character is unique and real.

The first English rose (chapter) book, this one introduces four unique and real: BInah, Grace, Charlotte, Amy, and Nichole. They are best friends 'ill the end, and call themselves 'English roses'
Now, I'm 'rating' each of the Roses, based on there're personalities, interests, and oval likeness:
Binah: The serious one. Binah and her farther must run a very old-fashion, no-nonsense house after the death of her mother. Being 'The good one,' Binah gets 'spoiled' (meaning that she has the most praise and pleasant things happen to her though out the series.)' She is quite strict and can sometimes be depressing. My personal least favorite English rose. (1.5/5)
Grace: The tomboy. Grace is surprising art-loving for a jock, and still has her emotionally outburst on occasional. Grace is very 'real,' take a look at a middle school female soccer player and you can see the similarities. Besides her occasionally rudeness, Grace is very likable English rose. (4.5/5)
Charlotte: The posh one. Charlotte is rich, and though not a total brat, things such as gossiping, complaining, cleaning, and making sure everyone has good manners can bring out the snotty side of her. Probably the least realistic English Rose. (3.5/5)
Amy: The model. Amy loves fashion and old movies. She's never afraid to speak her mind and loves being in the limelight. Loyal to
the end, this Rose is trustworthy. Probably the one least like me, but great character nonetheless. (4.5/5)
Nichole: MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE ENGLISH ROSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nichole is a bit moody, but she cares for her friends 24/7. She enjoys reading, writing, is 'in-between ' a girly girl and tomboy, and appreciates adults. The one most like me. (5.5/5)

Most realistic rose: Grace
Least realistic rose: Charlotte

Be a Material Girl and Get This Book!

I bought English Roses #4 used for my daughter, and she loved it so much that I knew I would have to purchase the other books in the series to whet her appetite (just about two months ago we found "Goodbye Grace?", so definitely check out thrift shops). She enjoyed this book, but was not totally crazy about it because it is basically an introduction to the characters, and does not have a plot at all. I feel that it should not be numbered "#1" because one, such as myself, clicking away at a frantic pace at that "Add to Cart" button, who does not, for some strange reason, read the synopsis, just assumes that this book is the first installment of a story series. Charming illustrations are presented with sweet tidbits ("Supporting Characters", "Grace's Glossary", "Inside Amy's Bag" (not mine), "Which English Rose Are You?"). You know what? Madonna is good at this! I do believe that the character of Binah is based on her, and, of course, Binah is presented first, Dominic the heartthrob (of course) prefers Binah, and Binah is the most likeable character...of course. You get the picture. There is a "Vital Statistics" section for filling out, just like the characters. The included VIP pass is null, as the the website is now named: "theenglishrosescollection.com". The website is not so great- there is no news, links and "About" are basically Madonna commercials, the "Shoppe" is low on supplies (two types of tea, two books, one overpriced shirt in only size seven), and the "Fun and Games" section seems geared toward a younger set (coloring pages, memory game). So, just ignore the membership/access hype that can be seen on the front of some books. But don't ignore this advice- get #1 if you think your girl will go gaga for it, then get the rest of the series before your girl gets obsessed with "Goosebumps".
